I have a 4 month labrodor who was fine until a couple of weeks ago when i noticed he was short of breath and frothing at the mouth after exercise. I took him to the vets and he had an x ray, he was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. He will be having an ecg in two weeks. Im really worried and upset because i wasnt expecting this at all. As he was a really healthy and giddy dog. The vet has only given me a few details does anyone know of this condition if so can you please give me some help or advice. THANKS

Hi have you contacted the Breeder that sold you the dog??? I would suggest thos as a first port of call as they may be able to help you?? Really if a doggie has such a severe problem at this age I would be worried...sorry, but that's how I see it as heart breaking as it is. Heart enlargement happens for various reasons, but is a sign of severe disease. So sorry, all the best, Dawn X

look on page 2 of this board-i posted a similar post titled 'enlarged heart-any experience?'. A few peeps have replied who have dogs with the same problem.

i don't know if this or this sheds any light on it for you.

i've read that 'Vetmedin' is quite successful in treating cardiomyopathy.....?

When my dog was diagnosed with an enlarged heart at 9 months (x-ray by Vet), she was referred to a Cardiologist.  He did deeper scans and x-rays, and found out that she had been born with a hole in the heart.  She then had a plug fitted into the hole in her heart (done through an artery in her back leg), and 12 months later another scan showed that her enlarged heart had shrunk to almost the size it should be.  It will be 3 years next April since she had her op, and she has been fine ever since. It might not be the same for your dog, but just a thought, here is where she had her op.   www.martinreferrals.com

Hope all goes well for your dog,
Kind Regards, Sue & Sasha
