Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel cough vaccination?
- By Goldmali Date 03.11.05 19:27 UTC
How many of you vaccinate for kennel cough? And if so do you vaccinate ALL your dogs?  I haven't vaccinated for it for years, but now when we have 9 dogs and are getting more and more active I'm worrying. We go to roughly 2-3 shows a month, and 2 training classes a week. Some of the dogs (4 of them) always stay at home and never go anywhere except for walks, but we hardly ever see other dogs during the walks. If I were to KC vaccinate the dogs, should I do ALL of them or just those that regulalry are around other dogs? Pros/cons of the vaccine? Does it still have to be repeated every 6 months?

hiya,

i've had my oldest done. It was the new up-the-nose one-lasts 12 months if i remember rightly. It doesn't safeguard from all strains of kc though. Touch wood (cue finger on head), she's not had kc since having the vaccine, but theres time yet!

i've only got two dogs, and the pup's yet to be vaccinated, so can't really say about having show dogs done!

It's covered by my nosodes.
A friend had kennel cough in her kennel last summer.  She stopped vaccinating 3 years ago.  The only dogs who didn't cough were the ones who were protected by nosodes. :)

I have my girls vaccinated against KC because our dog training club insisted on it.
It also was given up the nose but I found they both had a very slight cough for two weeks after of which the vet informed me may happen.
They have been to umpteen shows this year and I am glad I had it done ....I have heard of quite a few cases of KC in the last few weeks.

Only usually have our Akita done as he's the only one who goes into kennels. None of the others are done. Hardly dare say this, but haven't had kennel cough for years.

Thanks all. It's given me some food for thought. :)

do the dogs not sneeze (the vaccine out) after they have had it squirted up their noses?  If I had something whooshed up my nose my bodies first reaction would be to reject it, probably through a sneeze.  I've always wondered about the validity of nasal vaccinations.

Couldn't say really - I know our Akita can sneeze for Britain & I'll swear that I'll never get kennel cough as I must have got as much as the dog up my nose. What a rigmarole it used to be (although we've got it down to a fine art now) Our vet reckoned it was the quickest way to spoil a good dog's temperament as so many get so stressed out by it! :(  OH usually takes him now, as he's his dog, & I think he now has an injection not the up the nose job (mental note: Should listen to what OH says sometimes :D )

I have never vaccinated any of my dogs against KC as it is not 100%, it does not last long (even the newer one only lasts a year) and, like the flu vaccine, is only valid for a particular type of Bordatella.

Not had any of my dogs go down with it in 20+ years and they go to training classes, and compete all over the country in various sports and so are exposed to hundreds if not thousands of dogs per year.

All three of mine are due again in December, and will be getting it up the nose :P
Last year, after the LKA, there was an outbreak of KC, not just in our breed I think, anyway I'm taking no chances with all the shows we travel to, plus ringcraft etc  :)
