Hi I've a bitch that will be 6 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I'm not 100% sure she is though so I wanted a scan but am wondering if I would be better off with an xray. Is an xray much more expensive? From memory my vet charges about £30 for a scan (well he did about 3 years ago).

My vet charges about £100 for an x-ray as opposed to just under £30 for a scan. :) Persaanlly I would always prefer a scan as it's quicker and less hassle for the bitch -the last time I had one done the bitch just stood on the floor and it only took a couple of minutes.

We paid I think it was £55.00 or £60.00 to have our Staff scaned. That was done at our house, and we are in London were everything costs more. But the women who dose it says to do it between 4-5 weeks so you would want to get it done very fast, for best results.

wow cant believe the price your vets charge for a scan, i had my bitch scanned yesterday 31 days since mating & cost me £15 that was including v.a.t. just goes to show the price difference in areas, by the way our bitch is in whelp, puppies due 1st wk dec,

Hi Shirl and All

It is not necessary to scan pregnant bitches, if is a fairly recent fashion to do so.

She is either pregnant or she is not, scans won't change that.  You should know for sure within a couple of weeks and if you are not sure by eight weeks then that is probably the best time to check just in case she only has one pup and then you can be ready for a caesarian.

Human babies are routinely scanned to check for dates and defects, Canine pregnancies are becoming routinely scanned to take money out of breeders pockets :D

Hi I want to be sure whether she's having pups because A)my breed often whelps upto a week early  B) I don't want to be dragging the whelping box etc out of storage for nothing C) I don't want to be entering dog shows that I'm not going to be attending (i'm not rich enough for that ) D) I just want to know ! NOW! LOL

i paid £40 for a scan and then £80 for an x-ray--still no puppies :0(  xray would have been more if they had sedated her.
next season she had 8 pups and i didnt pay for any of that nonsense but i could see she was fat but didnt truly believe she was pregnant till i saw the babes move!

Also if you have people on your waiting list and your bitch isn't pregnant you can let them down sooner, and with a numericaly small breed get them on someone elses waiting list in good time.

If you discover signs that indicate your girl is pregnant it would be a nice surprise to wait and see if how many pups your bitch provides. Although It could be a bit of a letdown if she doesnt end up pregnant. Its up to you, I thoughT That would be a nice idea!

i would only scan if you cant tell by 5 or 6 weeks
i am every lucky as there are 2 scanners in the area 1 is only £10 and the other is £30 but that is for as many scans as you want on that bitch.
