We're thinking of buying a DVD recorder but not sure which one to choose. The prices seem to vary quite a lot.
Ideally we'd like one that allows you to watch one channel while recording another. And is it possible to transfer videotapes straight onto DVD - or would this involve 2 separate machines ?
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a particular type/model ?

Doesnt matter which make you get just make sure it can record on the minus discs. Some Phillips models record in both formats but not all makes do this. When i got mine i looked at comet's website as it gives you a detailed description on each model they sell then brought one from argos as i had vouchers to use. On some you can watch dvd's which have pictures on them in jpeg format as a slideshow ;)
Depending on your set up you should be able to transfer video to dvd but im not sure if this is possible if your thinking of getting a combi (hitachi do one). If you want to watch a dvd you have recorded on another dvd player then the disc must be finalised. This also means that the disc can no longer be recorded on though.

Sky plus at £49 and you can transfer recordings to the dvd player :)

You could get a combination VHS/DVD recorder. This would enable you to watch/record video tape or watch/record DVDs. Transferring from Video to DVD is then a simple one button operation on many of them.

Another option is to get a hard drive/DVD recorder. In this instance, you would record programmes onto a hard drive and you could either watch and delete it or decide you want to keep it and transfer it to DVD. This option is much cheaper as you are not paying out for DVDs unless you have decided to save the programme.

You could still transfer your video tapes to DVD by using a lead into the back of the recorder and selecting the correct input.

We have both of these types at work and prefer Panasonic or Pioneer, but it's personal preference really! Try www.empiredirect.co.uk as they do some really good prices.
