Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / When to start weaning pups?

My pups are 4 weeks now and I am wondering when i should start weaning pups.  I have already started putting wet food and water and the pups are eating it like crazy.  When you guys wean your bitch from the litter do you guys completely take her away from her pups or decrease the visits she sees them.  My bitch seems as though she only comes to the litter so often.  She doesn't even stay with the litter at night and she mostly lay on the floor away from the litter during the day.  Is she weaning the pups by herself?

Yes!   This is the natural order of things.  She will still feed them, but no-where near as much and will not wish to spend as much time with them, more of an overseer now, than a mother.  The pups should now be enjoying whichever weaning meals you are giving them too. Don't take your bitch away from her pups, allow her to come and go to them as she wishes.  But don't worry everything is going as nature intends.
