Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / What should i do?
- By cavalierz [gb] Date 02.11.05 13:15 UTC
I have decided to get a cavalier king charles spaniel bitch so i can show her and maybe even breed a litter from her and have more company for my two boy cavvies. I have only ever had male cavaliers and ive thought long and hard about getting a girl and ive decided that it is the right thing to to. Yesterday i asked my breeder if she thought it was a good idea because my two boys have not been neutered. She said that it wouldnt be a good idea because they would howl when she gets her season and disturb the neighbors.I live in the countryside and i dont think it should be a problem. I disagree with my breeder because i can easily keep them seperate when she starts her season. I would like to hear what you think i should do?

Listen to your breeder!  She sounds very wise and knows what she's talking about! :(

You have no idea just what lengths boys will go to when bitches are in season.  It isn't just a matter of keeping the bitch in a different room.  The scent of an in season bitch can travel for miles.  They may get on together now, but an in season bitch could make your boys fight, not eat for days and howl for England!  Rather than provide company for your two boys, you will be providing torture!

If only more breeders were as honest as yours and not just take your money!!  Do listen to her.

I agree with Val someone i know has 2 male Cavaliers & 1 bitch Cav the 2 males fight over her when she is in season. She hat to have both males done to stop them fighting so take your breeders advice.

Well, my male Cav and my male American cocker have fought over my Cav bitch and she hasn't even come in season yet - since she was 5 months old I haven't been able to keep them together. God knows what I'll do when she does come in!! :-(

If you don't mind the howling and you're sure you don't live near neighbours who will hear the noise, that's up to you, but I agree having 2 un-neutered males with a bitch is not a good idea. Having said that I know lots of Cav breeders who manage it, but I don't know how!! Why not show your 2 boys? Then maybe when they're too old to show you could get them neutered and get a bitch then? :-)

When I had a bitch and entire dog together and she came in season I thought I could cope but it was HELL.  He had a change of personality and even though they were in separate rooms most of the time (which was hard enough anyway) he would bark and whine and try to scratch the door down.  Just being in the same house is too much for most entire males, although I'm sure some cope better than others.  After one week I'd had enough and was tearing my hair out so my mother looked after him for me for the rest of her season.  Seriously, listen to your breeder because it was such hard work that I had him castrated and her neutered as I knew I could never go through that again.  I'm sure some more experinced people could cope but it wasn't for me.

I agree with you Susan, my boys howled and whined all day and all night for almost three weeks. The noise aside, it was the change in personality that I couldn't cope with. They didn't even know I exsisted - they would walk through/over anything to get to my bitch, would fight with each other and scratch walls/doors anything that was in their way. Both boys are now neutered but one still behaves the same way. I'm just waiting for my girl to regain her figure after her pups then she can be neutered too and we can all live happily ever after :)

When the dogs attack eachother do they hurt eachother or do they just growl abit?

Bless! :)  What do two teenage fellas do if they are both after the same girl?
I think that it's time to get real and listen to what EVERYBODY is saying to you. :(

Im listening and ive decided to get another boy because it wouldnt be fair for the boys to put up with that
- By Val [gb] Date 03.11.05 11:58 UTC
Well done!  I'm sure that's a better idea. :)

im sure most people with several entire males and females have them out in kennels and not in the house!
- By LucyD [gb] Date 03.11.05 21:57 UTC
Good idea. I love my girl very much, but I do sometimes wish I'd listened to advice about how my boys would react - and she's not even had a season yet! :-(

are you going to spay her???
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 04.11.05 17:56 UTC
I wouldn't go through the trauma of mixed entire sexes.  It's anxiety inducing on the best of days and the constant pressure to supervise them is awful.  My older dog drove himself round the bend and that alone is enough to ensure it wasn't "fair on his manhood" to keep a bitch in season anywhere near him.

yeah your right but are you not going to show your bitch coz she is beautiful LUCYD?
- By LucyD [gb] Date 04.11.05 21:21 UTC
Yes, I show my bitch, she was huge at 6 months but hasn't grown any more so is now not too big, just quite stocky, which I personally like. Have you seen her then Cavalierz? Or did you look on our website - tons of pics there, and she's a lot prettier since we last updated! I can't neuter my Cav boy as there is still a tiny hope of making him up, and of course if all health checks go well I will consider mating him to my girl. But I plan to neuter the Yankee boy, which will hopefully help all the testosterone wafting around my house!!! :-D
