Can anyone advise me on whether cross breeds make good dogs.  I am after a border terrier, but the breeder I spoke to only has a litter of cross breeds.  You can email me on huntbadja@aol.com

No one knows as being crosses you have no idea what the mix is, and even if you do you don't know which breeds traits are uppermost.

If your requirements from a dog are fairly broad and forgiving, not minding if the dog is likely to be very energetic or a couch potatoe, big or small etc, in other words a total suprise package then a cross is likely to suit.

If your the type of family that has been happy to ahve very different types of dogs with very different cahracter traits then you won't mind how the pup turns out.

It would help if you knew that the parents were of good health, sound and of good temper.

I personally prefer my dogs to be of more predicatable type and disposition.

Cross breeds can make good companions [dogs], if you don't won't
to show them or breed from them. They can make good pets,
But! its hard to know what they will be like large, small, if Dam and dog
have good temprements great!

Of course they make good dogs! :-)

Your on a site where most of us here breed KC pedigree dogs so of course we are all for people buying a dog of this type for many good reasons.  But a cross breed as long as it has healthy parents (which alas is....... difficult to know when a dog has no papers) is going to be as good a dog as any other.  Let's face it (going back a few years now)  most of us as children were brought up with our super cross bred dogs who lived to be good old ages and were terrific companions. Just use your instincts when you see the pups, look at the mother and ask the same questions as you would when buying a KC dog. If you are happy, then give one a loving home. A dog will love you and you that dog, pedigree or not!

Ive just took on a cross breed puppy from rescue, its a bit like doing the lottery.......You dont know what your gonna get.   Although yours will be different as you will know what the parents are like.  I think cross breeds make brilliant dogs, all my life I seem to have had one pedigree and one cross breed and loved them all the same.  Your on more of a winner if you can see the parents, as has already been said if you just want a pet and dont mind too much what it looks like go with your gut feeling.
