Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sore Eye!!
- By mackleback Date 30.10.05 07:45 UTC
Hi everyone. Just got up this morning and Tysons right eye is all swollen and looks VERY sore!! :-( It is all red underneath and his inner eyelid is covering most of his eye so he cant see. Just underneath his eye is swollen quite a bit too. He hasnt bumped it or anything as far as i am aware. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be or is there anything i could do to make it a bit better till tomorrow, then i can get him to the vets. Or should i give the emergency vet a ring today?? It looks VERY painfull and i dont know what to do?! :-( Any advice will be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Try bathing it with cooled boiled salt water or go buy some chloramphenicol eyedrops from a chemist. They're the same ones that vets use except for humans. Cost about £4 and you should be able to get them from Tesco or any supermarket with a pharmacy.

the vet will probably prescribe you cloramphenical (sp) which has only recently become an over the counter medicine.  it used to be only available on prescription and is generally used for conjunctivitis and stuff like that but be careful with eyes as they are very delicate.  If my dog has weepy eyes my vet advised me to use cold tea as this can reduce inflamation (think it might be the tannin in it) but I'm no expert and would be wary of doing any thing that could damage the only set of eyes we get.

Thanks guys. I phoned the emergency vet this morning and she gave him some eye drops to put in 4 times a day for a week. She put some green dye in his eye to check if there was any damage, and it was fine. She thinks he may have bumped it, and if it gets any worse to go straight back in. It is still very swollen, but not as red.

My family have always used cold tea to bathe sore eyes on cats and dogs for years, with no ill effects. It's pretty much the same as us putting cold tea bags on our eyes to reduce puffiness. Certainly worth a try til you can get him some drops or see the vet.

I use weak salt water on my boy when he gets a squinty eye - but it's not usually as bad as your one sounds. Glad it's a bit better now. :-)

Anton has been a naughty boy again this weekend and under his eye has slit again. I do the cold teabag method and it definitely reduced the swelling and soreness.  Off to the vets tomorrow though, looks like he may end up with a stitch in it this time.

God, why is he soooooo good for 90% of the year and decides to have a fight for 10% of it the little so and so.

That was a nice trip to the vets at 3.30 in the morning! She gave him a shot of what i suppose is a form of piriton and his eye went down alot within hours and was back to normal within a couple of days! I do hope the big mans ok x

Hi Mackleback!

I find it really easy to keep track of Lola's height. I jut measure how far up the walls the dirt reaches  :D

Tyson is getting huge!! Wouldn't like to be holding on to his lead when he decides to chase a cat or a squirrel!
- By mackleback Date 02.11.05 12:16 UTC
Hi.....You are right about the dirt up the walls!!! And just above that there is a nice border of drool!!! lol
