I am really interested in boxers and have a particular affection for white ones, but my question is (and I really hope I don't offend anyone!!), but can anyone tell me the percentage of deafness amongst white boxers or are they all usually deaf. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but how can colour affect hearing?? as there dosen't seem to be a problem in dogs with colours on them. All advice will be taken into consideration.

According to this site about 18% of white boxers are totally deaf. Others can be unilaterally deaf, as can coloured boxers with white markings.

This article explains the link between lack of pigment and lack of hearing.

I have boxers and only ever had two white puppies in seperate litters neither of these puppies where deaf. selective hearing yes but deaf no...I have just lost a very dear white boxer girl at 8yrs old and her hearing was perfect...I adore white boxers, if you are going too look at a litter take the white puppy aside and clap or whistle or any sound and see how he/she responds but a reputable breeder will know if they have a white puppy if it is deaf or not....
Guest why dont you join then you can ask many more questions as there are several boxer people who post on here.

If you do this subjective 'hearing check' make sure the person making the noise is in a different room to the puppy. Puppies who were believed to have hearing when 'tested' this way have since sometimes been proved (BAER) to be either unilaterally or even bilaterally deaf. They'd responded to visual cues and vibrations ...
