This month I am looking after a friend's labrador while she is between houses,so that I can see if I can manage the extra commitment of my own dog later on. All is going well except that one of my children is allergic to him and is sneezing etc. Can anyone suggest a dog which would be suitable for our family, bearing in mind that we would like a fairly (or very) big one? What do you think about an Irish Terrier, and are there any around? I had originally planned a Golden Retriever, or cross, so haven't done much research into most other breeds.

It depends what the child is allergic to. If it is the dnder (skin) then a longer coated breed may well not have the same effect. A lady once brought a puppy from me who was allergic round smooth coated breeds, but was fine around my double coated one (those with a wooly underfur, and longer outercoat) also terriers can be less allergy causing. The breed that doesn't moult is the poodle. If you wanted a large breed try a Standard poodle, it would need regular clipping (you could learn to do this or pay a groomer), they are highly intelligent! find a reputable breeder who health screens, probably through a breed club.

Thanks! How do I find out what she's allergic to? Perhaps I could Poodle-sit next time...

Try taking her to look at some pups and parents at a reputable breeders to see if she is affected. If she is ok I can't recommend a Standard Poodle highly enough - I wouldn't have any other breed! Brilliant with kids, other dogs, clean, no moulting, intelligent, loving - need I go on?? I know that the Cocker Spaniel is not big but I know of a family whose son is asthmatic and the doctor recommended a Cocker - and he was fine with it yet other breeds brought on a reaction.
