How long is a bitch in season

The season lasts about 3 weeks in total. usually from the first sign of bleeding. When the colour goes, despite popular belief that this is the end of the season, it is infact the most potent time so if you do not want to breed from her or she is very young (under a year you can't breed from them) best keep her on a lead at all times when out.

To be on the safe side do not leave her alone with a male dog until 28 days from the start of bleeding. Her vulva should gradually shrink to normal proportions as the season draws to a close. If this is a first season she will be a little bigger in this department from now on! After 21 or so days you can consider her finished, but watch her carefully for that extra week!
