Hi Can anyone help, I am thinking of buying a chihuahua and asked the owner if it has papers, I do not know much about what papers are needed for, I just saw it with alot of ads - so asked. She said that she isn;t giving the papers out as she is just selling it as a pet, and not for breeding, is this correct!!! as I may be paying £800.00 for this pet, does it matter if it doesn't have any papers. please help!!!

Ask the question "IS THIS PUPPY REGISTERED WITH THE KENNEL CLUB"? If it isn't - walk away. You will have no history of parentage of this puppy.

Could you contact me if the puppy you refer to has been bred by a breeder registered with Champdogs please? Many thanks

There is no reason not to give a pet owner the Kennel Club registration form as that can be endorsed 'progeny not for registration' to stop the new owner breeding KC reg pups.

There is no way that you would pay £800 for a Chi without papers. Run away and keep running This person needs reporting to the breed club, though I doubt that she's a member if she charges this.
MAKE SURE THAT THE DOG IS KC REGISTERED AND NOT WITH A CERTAIN OTHER REGISTRY. The KC is the only one that is properly accepted for a number of things such as being able to show, work, do agility etc. without having to pay out again to have them KC registered on the working register.

She's probably not giving out papers because she hasn't got any!!! £800 is a ridiculous amount to pay for any dog without papers - basically, you've got no proof that it is even purebred. As the others have said, only buy a puppy with
KC REGISTRATION

I know you probably can't say in public so you'll have to pm me, but who else could you register puppies with? I didn't realise there were other organisations apart from the KC

You could set up a registry yourself, and con people into paying for certificates you print out. They supply the details, and you don't need to check that they're true. A nice little earner - and people are gullible enough to fall for it!

If its not K.C. Registered, walk away. Talking about chiihuahua's there was an advert in yesterdays daily record, no mention of k.c. reg docs, just said pedigreed and they were looking for £1,000, how can they justify that price for a toy dog. If it was a reputable breeder im sure they would not need to advertise in the newspapers.

AHA...does it mean that if they pay a £1,000 for a TOY dog...I can charge astronomical amounts for a GIANT Newfie??? LOL :D
Seriously though, DON'T BUY IT!!! Contact the breed clubs for a list of reputable breeders and be advised by them! All the best, Dawn

Wow, chihuahuas are expensive! I paid £400 and £450 for my Cav and Yankee 3 years ago, and £500 for my tri bitch Cav 10 months ago. I expected to pay up to £700 for a tri bitch but £1000 seems an awful lot of money for a dog!!

I heard of some boxer puppies selling at £1200 and people were prepared to pay this amount!!!

I personally wouldn't trust anyone that sells dogs that aren't KC registered. You have to ask yourself why they're not registered..... is there something wrong with the parents, so the dogs wern't able to be registered. Perhaps something else.... but when buying a dog, that will be with you for another 15 years, price shouldn't be the only motive for purchasing it. I'd advise anyone to simply save up and get a puppy for a really good reputable breeder that will guarantee you a dog with 100% healthy parents ...... the price does seem a bit high though. For that price I'd expect a show potential (obviously KC reg). Here in Europe a good quality Chihuahua goes for around 1000 Euro (not sure how much that is in GBP), but a Chi without papers would be much, much less....

I did a post on here a while ago, which dealt with why a pedigree pup should have papers and be as well bred as any champion show dog. You might find it relevant ;)

Many thanks for all your help - The puppy advert was not advertised on champdogs!!! There aren't any here which is why I looked elsewhere. I searched the net and came across a free ad...section, I should have realised, anyway I went to see the puppy,as this was yesterday and I have only just got all your reply's today (thanks to the first two replies - I managed to ask the question), the reply was brief, "yes she is registered", but she,s not giving me the papers as "she is too small to be bred - It will kill her". I explained I didn't want to breed her, just wanted a pet (baby substitute). It was extra tiny weighing 2lb, lady said she would grow to about 4lb, I didn't feel this was right - not knowing too much about the breed, but what if it had have got ill, I would've been so upset, after getting attached - naturally and maybe its life isn't as long as a normal sized one (I really have no idea) but I decided to walk away, a little upset, because she was so cute, and I shouldn't say but I felt sorry for the poor girl, the house really smelt of urine and she had a few other dogs and cats roaming around. I hope when she does sell her, she finds a nice home. Thanks again for helping me. I have been put off buying another dog now, so will stick to my Akita, I'll try to get her to sit on my lap instead.
You made a very good choice to walk away! well done! i know it is so tempting when there sitting there needing you and looking so sweet and inocent but she could of easily developed problems later on and it would of all ended up in tears. well done
Glad you walked away. Not so sure that an Akita and a Chi. are a good mix. Yeah, I have a medium and a small breed but they have to be watched every second. One of my Spanish loves to herd the Pom's, but it isn't a good idea to let her.

Think you've made the right decision. I'm sure I wouldn't risk a Chi with my Akita - he's far too clumsy, he'd probably trip over her & break his neck :D

Thank you for your understanding - I have been upset all day actually, but is nice to see someone understands and makes you feel better.

Good for you for walking away! :) I hope you find a lovely little Chi puppy soon! :) Have you yet contacted the breed clubs? If you contact them and become a member they will be (should be) more then happy to help you, answer any questions you may have and give you details of breeders :)
If you join at least one club then it shows that you are serious about the breed and you can access so much information :)

Good on you for not buying the pup even though you felt sorry for her as the conditions were less than ideal. If only more people walked away from sellers like this, less puppies would be condemned to such a bad start in life.
You might be right not getting such a small dog if you have an Akita. They're lovely dogs but she'd only have to accidentally bop a chi on the head trying to play and you could have a dead puppy. My friend with a male akita got him a little shiba female as a companion and they got on really well.
