Hi

Quiz is now 10 weeks old (bc) but is constantly hungry - well; not sure if he really is hungry or if he is one of life's perpetual eaters. I know as a pup in the litter they were all fed together and he always got there first - he ended up a lot bigger than the others.

I brought him home and he was on beta - I planned to change him to JWB but he developed severe runs - the vet kept him for the day to rehydrate him and I have since had to feed him on Hills prescription i/d for past few days. I am now slowly introducing JWB to the i/d. I feed him according to the amounts on the tin/pack but he is still looking for more.

Should I ignore this and make him wait until his next meal, feed him more (tho I obviously dont want to overload his tummy) or is there a way i can bulk his food up that wont harm his tummy or his weight?

He is fed 3 times a day. Many thanks

Jane

Hi,

If your pups had the runs,he might feeling better himself and now is hungary, however I would continue for the next few days feeding small er amounts jwb to really make sure he stays firm ,last thing you want to do now suddenly give more food when hes had a lighter diet and tummy still feeling seneitive and runs return due to sudden overload of food.

Then *gradually* increase the food is the key.

What it says on the bag is a *guide only* so if your pup is clearing the bowl and still hungary increase a* little* more food next time but do not let her become fat and some puppies are greedy and don't actually need anymore
they should clear bowl ,perhaps look for more, but remain content until next feed time. If  during the time between meals hes looking for his bowl then you know to give him a bit more at the next feed time.

Obviously as they get older you gradually increase food over time.

Im sure others will advise who have BC'S themselves as I have Goldens.

I don't have BC's either but our pup sounds just like yours. The breeder said he used to sleep by the bowl & was usually first to eat & last to leave. He's 23 wks now & still VERY food orientated - great for training. He will eat anything & would most definately over-eat given half the chance like a lot of dogs. I go by his weight & appearance. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with some good advice & tips for you

Thanks both of yu - always reassuring to know someone else has the saem experience. That's a good tip to see if he is looking at his bowl between meals - yes, he does. After a couple of hours he will go and lie down in the kitchen where his bowl goes and has now started jumping up to the side where I keep the food !!

But will take your advice and keep him very steady for the moment - couldnt bear to see the little mite with those runs again - it was heartbreaking.

Jane, in this kind of situation it is better to feed more small meals rather than few large meals, if that makes sense?  It will be easier on his stomach to have several smaller meals a day and not just sudden loads of big meals...

Hi
maybe try splitting him to 4 feeds a day, I was feeding my dobe 4 times a day till he was 16 weeks (or there abouts) he would quite happily eat 4 times a day still, but don't want him to get fat.  He is eating well over the recopmmendation on packet, but he is just right and his stools are still firm etc. I have found that if he eats too much he has a loose stool, so it is all a bit trial and error.

Thanks both of you - I am now going to go back to 4 meals a day. Yesterday he developed loose stools again, tho not the horrid smelling water that he had last week (sorry everyone!).

I am watching him like a hawk in the garden becuse he does devour everything - he is now on JWB puppy with no I/D - maybe this is just a combination of eternally a scavenger combined with a pup with a sensitive tummy - heaven !!

4 smaller meals is sensible - no overload and hopefully he wont be feeling so hungry.

Just to update you all that 4 smaller meals a day has worked - he is not scavening and we have managed to sort his loose poos out at the same time - so thank you.

Glad to here Quiz is better! It is so difficult at this age to know what to do ( the same as with your first baby!) you get such conflicting advice. Glad to see it has helped you out though... Good luck with Quiz
