We have a large showground in the vicinity, and in fact this morning, I was exercising Freya over there, where we met with her mum and brother. Whilst we were there, we were aware that arrangements were in hand for the erection of a firework display area, but, in our ignorance, took very little notice of when it was actually going to take place.
Well, it took place tonight - a full week before Guy Fawkes' night. And why was it being held tonight? Because other displays are planned during the rest of the bl**dy week

This one was, apparently celebrating Dilwali - and there is another display planned, on the same field, on Wednesday, and yet anothr one on Saturday.
My poor cats are hiding in the dog beds - the dogs are not too bad, thank goodness - but I do feel that 3 organised displays on the same field, in the same week are AT LEAST two too many.

I really do feel for dogs and cats this time of year.....i have to keep my dog in because he's petrified of fire works :-( I just don't understand why people can get hold of fire works before 5th Nov, it's so silly.
Please give all your pets a {{{hug}}} from me Margot

Diwali is a very popular Indian festival. It lasts a week I think and fireworks play a symbolic part in the celebrations. When I worked for a London Council answering service we would get complaints every night about the fireworks. If there weren't the restrictions that there are they would continue throughout the night.

Fortunately it's not been too bad around here yet. Having said that, Tara refused to go out last night, so we kept our fingers crossed and hubby got up early this morning (forsook his extra hour in bed) to let her out this morning :) She stuck her nose out of the back door tonight, but wouldn't go, so I picked her up and carried her out, dumping her unceremoniously on the lawn :D There weren't any bangs, so she performed, thank goodness and we can have a lie-in tomorrow :) She is actually a lot better this year - not really shaking or too upset as long as she can get into one of her hidey-holes :) Bramble couldn't care less. The big display around here will be on the 5th, so will just have to pray that her bladder will hold out :D

They've been banging around here since about 6pm! My 2 older girls have never bothered about fireworks before, but tonight neither wanted to be outside. Hermione just done an enormous pee in the livingroom!! 11 month old puppy, no problem - she doesn't understand what the 2 older ones are worried about! :)

The people who celebrate dwali
are probably sitting at home
on nov 5th saying ''they are a bloody week late.
how the, heck can they get fireworks after dwali.''
This is the MULTI cultural world we live in,
looks like we all have to adapt, and be aware ,take
precautions a week or to early or later, lets face it
they are here (fireworks) from now until new year.
my dogs bark like mad for 3 months!!

Yep - exactly! My fault for not looking properly at the posters - they were the usual "spectacular firework display" posters and I just assumed that the display was next Saturday:(
What I fail to understand is why this particular location has been given permission for 3 displays in 1 week!!

Here is Sussex its the done thing for every village to have a bonfire and firework display. They started 2 weeks ago. Our village had theirs on Saturday. The thing that really gets to me is that people go to the display then come home to hold a party and have private fireworks - going off last night until the early hours of the morning and still going off tonight. Sophie 7 mths is a jibbering wreck today barking at any noise and frightened to go into the garden Why cant they be banned?

We have had fireworks going off since the middle of September, having said that only on about 4 or 5 different nights, Jed doesn't seem bothered by them at all, the week before last we were outside he was in the middle of 'being busy!' and a huge one shot out above our heads made a huge bang and Jed barely seemed to notice it, he didn't even stop what he was doing! Having said that, some of our old dogs were petrified of them, so I know how you are all feeling. I must admit, I quite like going to see them, but I hate having to hear them practically all year round. At the very least, there should be only specific days you can use them, but obviously the best thing would be to only have organised displays, I will add as well that of all of the ones we have seen go off it has been kids letting them off :(

Last week I trained the dog to lie flat on her side when I say 'bang' just for my own amusement, should be more grown up at my age I know. Yesterday we had visitors and I showed them her latest trick and one said does she do that when she hear's fireworks? Bless - it's hardly the same I explained.
I am very lucky as my dog was standing at the window watching fireworks Saturday night. They don't bother her but they do bother me. I think they are a flipping nuisance. Last night some smart alec let off a couple of bangers at 2am

They should be kept to organised displays only
no matter what culture

Just looked up on the web and 1st day of Diwali is 1st November. All the fireworks so far must be everyone's practice runs :D Seriously, When I was in Sainsburys at the weekend there was a crowd of people buying fireworks.
I listen to the fireworks exploding and think £5, £10, £15 ........ more money than sense!

My point is that this WAS an organised firework display - we are 2 miles away from it, and not only could we see all the fireworks (for free ;) ) but the noise also echoed all around us (the "booms" were enough to rattle things inside the house! ). And we have another TWO displays to look forward to on the same site this week :(
