i bought a dog from a "showing home".i wanted a litter from off her at a later date but noticed she had a hernia just after the previous owners left (i should of known better) i pulled them up about it but just got told they forgot to mention it and dont worry she is ok to have a litter.i have been told by my vet not to breed off her. the previous owners will not even talk about it nor offered to help in anyway.what would you do about it!!

I would enjoy her as a pet....I would not breed from a bitch with a hernia

a pet girl is what she is but i already have 3 pet dogs and did not need another now i have to try and find yet another home for this girl of which i could of done without is this normal practice for breeders as i would never do such a thing

So you bought her as a breeding bitch? Can I ask why? if you already have 3 other dogs?

What would you have done if she didn't turn out to be a good example of her breed in the show ring? Or she didn't pass her health tests prior to breeding, still rehome her?

Were you planning to show her? Her hernia wouldn't stop you from doing that.

Caveat emptor, I'm afraid. Would you buy a used car without test-driving it at least - ideally get a mechanic to check it out? I'm assuming she's not a baby puppy - did you examine her and see her health certificates before you bought her? Did you explain that you wanted to show and (if she was good enough) breed from her?

My friend has had several bitches with umbilical hernias and has bred from them with no problems. Don't know if it varies from breed to breed though. :-)

A lot of hernias are genetic so no I wouldn't breed form her for fear of producing puppies with hernias or a genetic predisposition for them.

LucyD,
Would your friends several bitches be related by any chance?
hi all.thank you for your replies
anwen:- my dogs are pet dogs.i bred them all but my 9.5yr old.i will never sell any of them as a home for any animal should be if possible a home for life.i have room for approx 8 dogs and more if i wanted so room not an issue.i have decided not to breed off my dogs as they are too old,no papers, and 1 now has problems with her knees,as beautiful as they are i consider them not good enough to breed from. and i bought the new girl to go into a different breed and was hoping to breed a litter off her and keep all the quality girls if any as a starting point and going off her breeding she should of by all rights produce some quality offspring.
sandrah:-the previous owners said she wasnt good enough to show but is good enough to breed from.yet they said she had been shown and got a range from a couple of 1st to 6th in the ring.i am not a show person and i am a total novice to this breed i did explain that i was buying in the dark as a novice.they took advantage!i would not of bought her if i knew about the hernia.i did not want to buy a pet dog of which she is.
val:-no i wasnt planning on showing her i just wanted 1 litter from her and the hernia wouldnt be a problem for her in the ring or for doing her job.but been told it would be a different matter when bred from.
jeangenie:-she is nearly 15 months old.i did check her over but i missed the hernia.(some dog person)!!i never looked hard for it to be honest as i thought i was buying from a decent source.yes i explained i wanted a litter i was told no problem!
lucyd:-in my opinion any animal with a hernia or any other serious defect should not be bred from not only is the breeder putting their dogs life/health at risk it also may result in a lot of demic dogs being brought into the world and i think there is enough breeders out there that do that sort of thing without me adding to them.

If she's not good enough to show, then how is she good enough to breed from?

splodge, I'm trying to understand....
You say "i bred them all but then "i have decided not to breed off my dogs as they are too old,no papers, and 1 now has problems with her knees
So have you bred from a dog with no papers?
And you said "i am not a show person and i am a total novice to this breed "
If you are a novice to this breed, and you don't go to shows, how did you know that she was good enough to breed from? I don't understand why you would want to breed a breed that you know little about?

Yes most of them are / have been (I'm talking about different generations over 20 years here), does that make a difference? I just never thought that a small hernia was 'a serious defect'!

The problem with breeding from a bitch with a hernia is that, with the pregnant bitch having a hugely swollen abdomen, it's possible for the weakness at the hernia to rupture and the bitch and litter are lost.
Hernias are believed to be a hereditary problem.
to me a problem dog breeds problems and what is the point of that.i thought breeding was about producing healthy animals and from healthy animals and without any defects.of course defects arise in most breeds but there is no point in making tham happen.my girl with bad knees is a good specimen for her breed (in my opinion)and her knee problem is not down to a hereditary problem but she could pass it on so she will not be bred from of which causes me a problem as all my eggs were in her basket, but thats just the way it is!
I don't want to sound off, but are you saying the only reason you are not going to breed from you nine year old bitch is because her knees have gone?
Edited to add: Sorry I think I read it wrongly. Sorry I am all over the place today!
>her knee problem is not down to a hereditary problem but she could pass it on
How can she pass it on if it isn't hereditary?

"i bought the new girl to go into a different breed and was hoping to breed a litter off her and keep all the quality girls if any as a starting point"
You say this, but you also say you don't show and you are a novice and don't know much about the breed, How would you find a stud that complemented the bitch? how would you know which of the bitch pups would be quality? a starting point for what? more breeding?
I'm confused, reading this thread I really can't see any justification for breeding any pups here :(
If you weren't after another pet why would you want a bitch to breed more pups from?
If you bred this bitch and kept the bitch pups what would they be if not pets? (as you don't want any more pets ;) )
