Whats every-ones opinion on getting their dog their booster yearly ??
Always do it. Both of mine are done together in March
(By the way, I'd be careful about asking a simple question such as that...certain people seem to think you are being threatening - stupid, I know)

I used to do it religiously, now I only boost adults every 2-3yrs. Have to get it done if they are going into kennels anyway.
How come you only do it every 2-3 years Anwen?

I have looked into this very very seriously , and although I've read up on it extensivly still can't decide in which direction to turn. As for seeming threating I don't understand why any-one would get so upset about a simple question. I'm only asking for peoples opinion.
I know but if you read the post I put on breeders rehoming their puppies and on the DWA Act, it seems that a few people thought I was out to get them!

I don't think there is any call to be rude about other posters Keira, if you read the threads again you will see twice you accused me of not reading your posts when the boot was on the other foot. I suppose it would be stupid to consider you threatening but as I have already assured you I certainly don't think
that about you :)

Jamjar,
If you insure your dogs you will find that unless your dogs have boosters the insurer will not pay for any treatment which could be related to diseases which could be prevented by boosters.
Stacey

Yes, I do and have always done so, with no ill-effects to any of my dogs.
Actually, I stop boostering them when they reach about 14 years. :)

I don't, lost too many after having their original vaccines and their boosters, this was in Pomeranian's. Have to say that we started using Nobivac nearly 9 years ago and never seemed to have a problem since though. This is the only vaccine that I would go with.
I only give my dogs their first injections, and then every 2/3 years. Though I might change my thoughts on that. A friends bitch has been seriously ill at the vets for over a week do to Auto Immune Anaemia (sp) after receiving a booster. Thankfully she is recovering, but it makes you think.

I do the first booster than booster for the viral diseases every 3 years and for lepto annually in the spring. I've never had a vaccine reaction in my own dogs and don't know anyone who has had a serious reaction in their dogs either.

You do now, I've had 2 react badly to vacs, one the first ever puppy jab and the other shows serious ill effects for a few days after boosters so I now no longer do them.
The one that had a bad reaction to the first jab went on to live to 16 without any further jabs.
My dogs frequently come to a rescue kennels with me, run round the grounds and mix with the dogs so I know there is a risk

I think that will be the regime I will be following from now on Jas I had some reservations about the 3 year period but it seems to be working out OK. I have had dogs go a bit off colour for a few days after boostering but I would not consider that an serious adverse reaction. When giving any pharmaceutical drug their must be a reaction otherwise there is no point :) and sometimes that is going to affect the dog in other ways but all in all I think the benefits are worth it. I certainly would never consider dropping the Lepto as we regularly walk along the canal, swim in the lakes etc.
Lol@ at the ones who a short while ago wouldn`t dream of not doing boosters every single year no matter what anyone said,(oh except their vets who told them vax every year) including the immunologists & makers of the vax :D :D :D
By Isabel
Date 30.10.05 21:03 UTC

I think I said quite clearly I wanted to wait and see how it went, let information about those on the new regime percolate through, perhaps you need to read the threads again :)
percolate through????????????????
Very strange way of describing it..........& yes I know the meaning of percolate.
Whats that saying he who laughs last............ :D :D :D :D
By Isabel
Date 30.10.05 22:54 UTC

........laughs alone? :) Well you will be if no-one understands what you are laughing at :)
I've done exactly what I said I would, wait to see if any more anecdotes emerged (prefer that to percolate? ;))
The only opinion I go by is the experts opinions. Intervet & Fort Dodge, the makers of Nobivac & Duramune vaccine say that their vaccines for parvo, distemper & adno give immunity for 3yrs so yearly boosters aren`t required, other immunologists have scientific proof vaccines give lifetime immunity :)
http://www.intervet.co.uk/binaries/92_70710.pdfhttp://www.goodnewsforpets.com/news/current_releases/071204_Duramune.htm*"Option to boost annually for leptospirosis and parainfluenza"
"Flexibility and choice in your vaccination protocols"
Vaccination schedule with revaccination with Procyon Dog DA2PPi/CvL every 3 years, and vaccinations with L/Pi in the interim years" *
The above came from the link below, looks like another manus vax gives immunity for 3yrs.
http://www.noah.co.uk/code/summary2004.htmps my pups had a severe adverse reaction to vaxs & I know a lot of people who`s dogs have also had adverse reactions to boosters.

I go by my own experiences. I
know I'm not spinning. I only
believe other people. ;)

Collette - on what grounds do you base your statement on "alternative medical safty(sic) for your dog pm me" - are you an alternative practitioner, or a vet? I note you are a trainee dog trainer - some of us on this board have over half a century's experience

Well I always vaccinate. Sam is just recovering from Leptosperosis and I guess the insce wouldn't pay up if he wasn't vaccinated.
By Isabel
Date 31.10.05 11:31 UTC

I remember your post about that. How is Sam coming along? He was swimming in the Lakes wasn't he, I know you can't be sure but what stretch of water do you think was involved?
By ange
Date 31.10.05 11:43 UTC
Well he is so much better Isabel, he goes to the vet tomorrow hopefully for a clean bill of health. He swam in a number of lakes, we walked around Grassmere and part of Derwentwater so he was in and out of the water most of the time. I thought the prime suspect was Tarn How but my OH says its fed from streams so we will never know.

I'm very glad he's made a full recovery :) I suppose you will never know really. I vaccinate in the spring to try to have maximum cover over the riskiest period I hope, but my dog swims in Dewentwater all year round. Can't imagine she would enjoy life if she didn't so it's just fingers crossed really :)
Yes Iam a trainee dog trainer, but that does not mean I am fresh out of school. I have 28 years of dogs experiance, (I am 28 but I grew up teething on dog bones, sleeping in baskets and learning to walk with the dogs) I have grown up with dogs, my parents have always breed and shown, so have I, (meet my oh at a show!!) my uncle is a vet, and has the same views as me on vac's (he is a vet that suggests the best for the animal, and the animal comes first over money) he practices alternative medicine and I have read nearly all the info there is out there on it and has soon as my daughter turns 2 (a year to go) I start my degree in animal alternative medicine. I did give my pups there first jabs but no i will not booster and I am torn which way to go with the puppy jabs on the next addition to our family (we are going to get a GSP when alfies 2, only 16 months to go!!)
I hope this explaines it all.xx
ps Alfies a dog, not my daughters name!! Have only the one dog, at the mo and thats enough!!

Always had the initial puppy vaccinations, but for various reasons have not had boosters done:
1 dog had flea allergy and had to be on daily steroids all her life from aged 3 - vet recommended not boosting her after that due to steroids.
1 dog with chronic skin problems - was never well enough to get his boosters!
2 dogs with Familial Shar-Pei fever - it's an immune mediated problem so there was NO WAY I was doing boosters!
Am now left totally unsure if I should booster my TM puppy. Might just do the lepto and parainfluenza.

Hi Collette
Where are you you going to study for the degree in animal alternative medicine? I have searched all over the place for such a course and cant find one.
To keep things on topic - I do vaccinate but every 2 years.
My dog died aged 6 after a booster injection so that was the end of boosters in our house.
The 2 dogs I have now are 4 and 9, they've never been boostered and very rarely have to visit the vet.
True, they can never be boarded or accepted for insurance but that's a small price to pay in my book.

Do you have insurance Tyby? I was wondering if you don't does it affect any claims.

If it's the same as mine only conditions which could have been prevented by vaccination wouldn't be covered
Ane
No, ange, I don't have insurance. Not just because of the illnesses which wouldn't be covered though - I just think they're all a bit of a rip-off really :)
I do put money aside each month though to cover any unexpected illnesses or accidents.
I do not booster mine anymore used to every year till i had to pts through to many boosters she was only 5 years old now i only vaccinated them first booster after that every 4 years.

So what is everybody's views on the fact that they now jab puppies at 8 and 10 weeks ?? Is it a good idea ??

Hi Syffuf
I just bought a Border Collie pup 14 weeks- took it to get the first injection the next day(this could'nt be given as he was showing signs of sickness) he was given an antibiotic jab and i was told to bring him in Wed once he's improved.
Next day he had a little pus from eyes, runny nose, diarrhea still sickness, in the evening he had a fit , whilst on the phone to the emergency vets he fitted again.
He arrived at the emergency vet hospital within 20 minutes in a colapsed critical state-many tests were done and DISTEMPER was diagnosed.
IF ONLY ALL PUPS HAVE THEIR JABS- they are so young and not strong enogh to catch anything especially a virus that cannot be treated!!!

I'm so sorry Helen -I understand the reason for your other question now. This is pretty much what happened to me as well. In my case the breeder didn't vaccinate her dogs and she even KNEW another pup had been diagnosed with distemper from the same litter when I collected my pup............but kept quiet. I was just SO glad all my other dogs were vaccinated.

Well i certainly got sucked in by my breader- she advertised as a breader on the internet- she had told me that she had sold all the other pups and has just the 2 brothers left- they both were full of energy bouncing about-so i choose one! took it to be injected the next day but too late- she can't believe he is unwell-i'm trying to explain that he's more than unwell-he may not make it-still she's not bothered about the brother ,can you believe it-she offered him to me-NO WAY !!!

OMG - this is terrible. I feel so sorry for you and the poor puppies. I don't suppose she'll inform the other puppy owners and if their puppies get sick they won't necessarily know it's because of the breeder. Is there any come back in this situation. Where do you stand?
By jas

This is so sad. :( Any breeder worthy of the name would have had a pup they kept to 14 weeks fully vaccinated as a matter of course. And this just goes to show what utter nonsense the 'don't vaccinate brigade' talk.
I don`t vax my pups & I
am worthy of the name breeder

Sorry for the your pup tho Helen, it must be a very worrying time for you, hope he pulls thru :(
Hi Christine, interested to know why you don't vaccinate your puppies.
Hi Christine, I had not seen your link before and was horrified to read what you and your poor pups went through. I'm not surprised you have the views you now hold.
Thanks A :)
It was not a decision I made lightly tho, was done after an a lot of research on my behalf, talking to vets, some of them specialists in immunology, nutrition, epilepsy etc. what their views were.
