I have the same problem with my Collie-Alsatian cross - and with it being the firework season, he's terrible. Tonight he refused to go in the kitchen and cried for ages because of some muppet in the back alley with bangers. Mind you, I think our Sam's problem may be that he was a rescue dog so he's probably been through some terrible times. We have no idea when he was abandoned or how long he'd been there, just that he was approximately 3.
Has your dog been raised with loud noises? If they aren't then they're porbably more likely to start at them - Sam did at first, until he got used to my dad falling over everything! :D He's petrified of the Dyson hoover, though. Does he bark at noises like you dropping things or clattering your pots when you're washing the dishes, or is it more like the postman opening your gate, thunder, people letting off fireworks etc.?

i got him at just over 8 weeks and as i live local to a park where the firework displays are every year may not help but he is used to loud noises and he barks in the dark at nothing i am baffled by this he seems so determined to scare the noises away lol

Heh. I think ours just has a hoover phobia - he's got a very long fluffy tail and a good portion of it went up the old hoover (Thankfully not a Dyson!) by accident once - he got too close and his fur just got slurped up the nozzle. Didn't hurt him, just gave his a fright, I think.
Out of interest, is your cavalier neutered? Sometimes intact dogs can be a bit more vocal - at least, this is my experience, may not always be the case.

Yes, that's true - mom said to me today (whilst discussing my potential room mate having a dog) that "any dog is better than no dog" when it comes to security. Sam is a godsend actually, we had a bunch of particularly dodgy neighbours next door once who tried to break in through the kitchen window - heard the dog bark and legged it off. We had no proof, but we know it was them. So glad we had the dog, otherwise who knows what they'd have done!
If you find a way to get him to stop barking at silly things, do let me know. I would love to stop mine terrorising my postman! :D

My Cav boy has a horrible yappy bark, luckily he only does it if he hears another dog in the garden, or at this time of year with the fireworks. Fingers crossed my girl doesn't bark, though she has an adorable frustrated sort of growl when her Kong rolls under the coffee table yet again!!! :-D

well mine growls and barks with a funny squeak noise at things ie balls teddies and things he wants to pick up lol
My eldest cav barks at sounds and birds in the garden. the little one barks at noises in the house. I reckin they got it figured out for laziness so only one barks at a time. ALthough they both bark when we leave the house for a walk as the close inn full of cats that just sit there staring! One day I've let the girls off LOL
