Moose has had a problem with her ears that doesn't seem to be clearing up :( They are not overly waxy, smell horrible and are very sore :(

She has had antibiotic drops and cleaner which I have used but no big improvement.

I have heard that Thornit is good but do you think it will help ?

Also if it is a powder then how do you administer it ?

I think I will need to go back to the vet but thought I might try this first ? What do you think ?

Hi Lucy, I have a similar problem with Emma, just the one ear. Ear very red and angry and smell was awful. Antibiotics, ear cleaners and just about everthing else tried, nothing worked (short periods yes) long term no.  I tried Thornit, used it everyday for a week and ears cleaned up a treat, I now use twice a week and have had no more problems.

I use and old metal teaspoon, and just dip the handle into container taking around a pinky nail sized amount of powder and just tip into the ear, not right into the canal, but just at the edge and give a good gentle rub.

I've used it with success on the cats from time to time

My Anton has been rubbing his one ear and it's quite swollen, I've been to the vets no luck, used different ear products that I've been happy with over the years no luck, tried Thornit and again not touching it!!

I hope it does the trick as she screeches anytime she scratches or I use the ear cleaner, poor girl :(

I've found it really good for my dog's paws and tum (always licking and biting them and scratching lately :( )  ears also looking great :) :)

I had a dog like this, cost a fortune in steroids, antibiotics etc, always at the vets, always irritated ear, when he went in to have teeth scaled I asked them to check for a polyp, as they couldn't see right into the ear for the swelling.  Vet poo-poohed the idea but I pointed out it was my money ;) (vet wanted to resect the ear canal )  It was a polyp on a long fine stalk, vet just snipped it at the base and the dog was heaps better, the thickening of the ear lining went back to normal over the next few months.

Maybe worth a thought?

Thanks for that, this is quite interesting.  He has absolutely no infection, ears are clean etc.  I might even ask one of the Consultants that I work for to have a look down and see if he can see anything as myself and my boy are nearly at our wit send with it.  I feel so sorry for him.

The dog had to be anaesthetised/sedated (while having teeth cleaned ;) ) to have a proper look in the ear as the polyp was actually blocking the view at the angle of the ear canal and it was so inflamed and painful (irritation = constant scratching = swelling and corrugation of the skin of the ear canal and pinna)  The vet only did it to shut me up :rolleyes:  I'm assuming they used a specially shaped scope.  The polyp was snipped off and retrieved with a long thin forceps.  The ear canal in dogs isn't as straight as ours, it goes downwards and then takes an angle to the ear drum ;)

Did you get Anton's wars sorted in the end ? Moose is going in next week to be put under GA to investigate to see if she has any polyps. They are also going to do some blood and allergy tests as well :)

Her ear has never really improved and has flared up again quite badly :(

I hope so as well as poor Moose has been a star really as I know how much it hurts her when it is bad :(

Stuart my vet was very impressed though that I asked about Polyps ( Thanks :D ) and also how I had changed them both to Barf He was very interested especially on the improvement of Duds and her HD :)

It make such a difference when your vet knows they are not talking to just a run of the mill pet owner :D

just reading the posts my bullmastiff albert has terrible ears and I'm so tired of him being given drops and antibiotics that only seem to last a few weeks and then he's back rubbing it again. What is thornit? Can i buy it without going to the vet?
