My bitch is also vocal with people (different breed) and whenever she meets people, wheather they be new to her or familiar, once she's settled in for a cuddle  she emits a very deep growl. At first, for those that don't know her, it can be a little unsettling, but I've worked out that this is how she communicates :D She's 10 months old now and has been doing this since she was 5 months.
Her body language is very friendly, she uses her paws, normally 2 on their lap, rests her head on their knee and rumbles away. If you heard the noise from behind a closed door, you wouldn't enter :P
If she was being nasty, I would have thought that she would have moved away of her own accord. IME, dogs don't generally stay close to you if they're warning you off.
Guess what I'm trying to say is that you know your dog best, you can ascertain how her mood/body language is. Mine mutters away to many people, but does it mainly to those she likes the best :)
