I don't know about the pickled onions but I would know my boys smell anywhere.  I know where he has wee'd when we are out - now that is sad isn't it?

Same as echo, I would know my boys smell anywhere too. I can't describe it, but it smells of his feet, they're quite pungent :D .......scent glands on pads and all that. He's very hairy as well. But I adore his smell, it's comforting to me and makes me clench my teeth with love whenever I smell it :D Now that..is sad!

My bitch smells totally different, especially lately and I'm thinking that because she's young and not yet had her season, her hormones are giving off different weekly smells.

If I was blindfolded I could definitely identify my 2 by their unique fragrance :D

I know my dogs smells. Their ears seem to do it for me. A lot of people who I've talked to say how much they love the smell of their dogs ears.

Not sure about pickled onions though!
