Topic Dog Boards / General / Tailgate guard/car crates
- By ShaynLola Date 26.10.05 11:46 UTC
Hi All

We are hopefully picking up our new car at the weeekend (or rather, the dogs' new car!!) and I have been charged with the responsibility of kitting it out appropriately for the dogs. It is a van type MPV.

I have done a search on CD re: crates and I have seen a couple of companies that crop up time and time again so I have contacted them and am awaiting replies.

In the interests of being thorough, I also want to investigate the cost/feasibility of installing a tailgate guard and divider compared with the crate option but I'm not sure where to look. A Google search hasn't proved terribly helpful.

My questions are therefore:
1. Where do I look for a tailgate guard etc
2. Are there any advantages to crates as opposed to tailgate guard etc (and vice versa)
3. Is there anything else I should be thinking about with regard to making the car doggy-friendly?

Any advice, suggestions, experiences etc welcome...

Thanks

I got mine from Barjo, they do have a website not sure of the address though.  My ex OH and Dad fitted it and its great, gives the boys the whole boot to stretch out in and it doesnt rattle at all :)

I have a Barjo Tailgate Guard for my car and would certainly recommend them. I chose the tailgate over the crate mainly due to the extra space it gave them :)

http://www.dogcages.net/index.htm

I would recommend Barnesbrook, Dave is an ex aircraft engineer and so is brilliant at designing bespoke cages, tailgates etc for all types of cars. He has them on his computer or will go to dealers and measure up.  He will add hooks etc and post the cage/gate to you.

the advantage of using a cage rather than just a tailgate/guard is that the dog is unable to access upholstery, wiring, plastic etc etc and damage it, no snotty windows :D

It also means of course that you could use the cage in the house/hotel/when camping etc if you needed to.

Barnesbrook are known as the Silent Traveller and do not rattle; his work is of the highest quality and a lot cheaper than most.

Wow great links :) I love the tailgate guard, would be perfect for my Picasso.

Does anyone use boot liners to protect the cloth from the wet/mud that our loved ones share with us. I looked at a company called Climate Clothing Ltd at www.carseatcovers.co.uk which looks like a pond liner that covers the whole area and is held in place by velcro?

I can't fit my crate into the Picasso, too large so Citroen fitted a dog guard behind the back seats which is ok but the rear tailgate guard looks a must have item.

I have a Barjo crate.

Advantage - Stops getting 'Dog Nose' prints on the windows.  Keeps the car cleaner overall. If required can be taken out of car and used separately.

Disadvantage - Doesn't leave as much room for the dog as the tailgate.

I'm looking for a non-slip rubber boot liner too! This is our first brand new straight-out-of-the-showroom car and I would like to keep it in reasonable condition for a while at least but my two do like a good swim followed by a roll in the mud  . I shall check out the site you have mentioned. Thanks.

Thank you all :)

Tohme, I had seen on an older thread that you recommend Barnesbrook so I have e-mailed him already with my requirements.

I hadn't thought of the snotty windows (not to mention the Newfie drool....how is it possible for saliva to  have the same consistency as glue   ) and chewed upholstery so that's a big plus for the crates :D Also, being able to remove the crate to use elsewhere is a bonus.

Julie,

MMG guards can make a Doblo tailgate as I've already emailed Michelle with an enquiry for mine too! http://www.mmgguards.co.uk/
