Hi iam looking for a grooming tool to deal with the coat on a newfoundland they are both in moult and i spent ages grooming them and they get so fed up.
Is there such a thing as a shedding comb or something  and where can i buy it from.
also where can i purchase a new blaster from, the one i had has broken but i bought it second hand.
thank you

Hi

Yes, there are lots of tools you can use, from Shedders to Rakes, but always consider the type of skin and hair your Newfoundlands have before using the appropriate tools!  You can also use coat kings but I think these are a bit harsh.  The blaster, as you know, is very good for blasting out dead and loose hair.

To find blasters look at the following sites:

There is an excellent ex groomer on here called Val who may be able to offer some good advice also.. Val are you there?

Please please don't use a coat king on a Newfoundland, that coat just isn't right for one ;)

Betty, please don't use anything that will cut a Newfie's coat! :)  Use a Universal Slicker deluxe and a medium metal comb to groom out dead coat.  I've always found Simpsons dryer and seperate blaster to be good reliable workhorses! :)

The Simpsons link that I left is one of the many grooming suppliers who stock everything from a comb to shampoo and large cabinet dryers - you probably wouldn't get a Newfie in one of those??!! ;)
I was taught that it wasn't important to use a dog shampoo - others will disagree.  In the parlour I used a base concentrate, like Neutralia, with no colourings or perfumes, which suited sensitive skinned Westies too.:)  The most important thing about bathing dogs is rinsing, rinsing and rinsing again, whatever you use.  Heavy moulting can be really helped by bathing (getting a Newfie wet is not an easy task!:) ) and then blasting the dead coat out before grooming out the rest and drying.  It speeds up the process of getting rid of the dead coat. :)

I use polytar Shampoo. The key thing is 100% rinsing clear. When you think it is clear do it again for another 5 mins.

Some of the dog shampoos you wouldn't use on yourself so I wouldn't use on a dog. Full of fragrance etc. Not Ideal in my opinion.
