Topic Dog Boards / General / urine stench... (nice!)
- By clarebearzimba [gb] Date 20.10.05 21:30 UTC
Hi all,

Can anyone advise, what I can do to get a urine smelling laminate floor smelling nice?

I have an incontinent dog, who must sit at the bottom of the stairs and wet, as there is an area that is lifting (not a problem) and smelling (bit of a problem)

I've tried bleach, lemon juice, all the tried and tested remedies, but nothing has worked.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks,

Clare x

Why does the dog sit at the bottom of the stairs and wet ?

Maybe because it's incontinent :)

I think I'd try leaving a paste of bicarb of soda on it overnight, then washing off with a biological washing powder.   Just don't soak it any more, or it really will lift!

If the dog will sit in that particular spot, how about getting vet bed (which can be lifted & washed daily) to sit there, like a rug.   We took our fireside rug up, just after Christmas, because we had that problem with Purdey & replaced it with a large (new) vet bed, which could be shoved in the washing machine.

Yes I did realise the dog is incontinent as the OP has said in the post :)

I was asking why just in the one place as if the dog is incontinent then it would be all over the place unless it rests and sleeps at the bottom of the stairs and now where else :)

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom, but it might have soaked through the cracks, in which case nothing is probably going to work...

...move house and leave the dog behind. :D

Seriously, have you got any way of replacing the area that is lifting? I think that's the only way of doing it if it really whiffs as it's probably soaked into the underlay too. Maybe try the bicarb dry as it might help draw any moisure out of the cracks. The only trouble with vetbed is you'd have to make sure you got the non slip stuff or you might find yourself skidding down the hall every time you come down the stairs. Another thought is vetbed is designed to let the liquid straight through to keep the dog dry, so maybe a square offcut of vinyl flooring underneath it would be a good idea to prevent a repeat.

Try warm soapy water and white vinegar,
If that does not work, it mean's its soaked
under the floor. "new Floor" only thing!

Is it click flooring if so ...then cant you just replace the part where he lies ??

there is a bedding you can get for incontinent dogs I've seen it in the mags will take a look and try to find it for you!

To prevent any further damage to the floor I would try a rubber-backed cotton BATHMAT or two if the dog lies/sits and leaves wet patches.  They'll soak up urine but not let it through and can be washed regularly.  They aren't even expensive :D :D :D

If the flooring has absorbed the urine lifting and replacing the affected part may be the only remedy ;) but you could try

ODORKILL  (scroll down the page ;) )

It's used in kennels and catteries, so it should work for you ;)

Since found out that it is my little Sussex Spaniel that is weeing there, so it is purely because of the scent.

Bought two white vinegars over the weekend, white wine and distilled white vinegar.

I think it has soaked through, but have now put some laminate beading round so it can't soak in any more.

My questions now are, how can I cork my spaniel, which vinegar can I use, and will the barcarb work when the floor isn't wet.

My poor other incontinent dog is just soaking her bed, which I can wash.... and as for selling the house, that was in my plans, but not before I can work out how to deoderise my dogs/floor.

Thanks all,

Clare,

The only things that will truly get the odour out will also destroy the laminate - you need to soak the laminate to the same depth as the urine has reached.

I think it's best to bite the bullet and replace the floor.

Am going to try the odor-kill as recommended above....

If this doesn't work I am going to cry, as the colour laminate is now discontinued, and the hallway and lounge are all in that colour (bar one strip in the lounge - hence how I know this is discontinued).

Ho hum.... best I don't move just yet eh!  lol

Thanks all for your comments and advice.

Hi
I know this won't get rid of the smell etc but if it isn't your incontinent dog doing the mess and one of the others, you could try feeding that dog on that spot for a few days. I don't know if this works but have heard that it does with some dogs. Might help prevent anymore messes! Good luck with the odor-kill

Clare,

Replace only the laminate that smells, don't worry about a perfect match and buy some cheap carpet for your hallway.   No one viewing your home will think there is anything amiss.

Either that, if you or your partner are good DYI types than pick up some of the laminate it and replace it with tile.

As the smelly spot is at the bottom of your stairs - either of the above will look like you planned for it to be that way!
