Hi, i have a white gsd, and it doesnt matter what time of year it is he malts like crazy, my short haired and my other long haired, hardly lose any compared to him. the vet says he is fine and healthy but i just dont understand why only he malts so much. any advice please. thanks

Hi,
I think you will find that it comes with the breed. I have had 2 german shepherds and looked after many and every one malted loads in comparison to my shorter breed. There didn't seem to be a seasonal malt either, it was just constant. I did groom regularly about every 4 days and it did help, but there was still a lot of hair shed. What brushes combs etc do you use? It may also help to take him to a professional groomer to get his coat stripped.

If you decide to take this route, please make sure that you say that you ONLY want the dead coat removed - there are some groomers who would clip a Shepherd if you asked for the coat to be stripped!!

Oh how very true Val :D  I've seen a groomers idea of a "stripped" Shepherd and believe me, it wasn't very nice.

Shepherds do have a tendency to moult and IME, if you have central heating or keep them in warm areas they shed everywhere, every day :P

With our last Shepherd, we lived in a very old house with no central heating and she put on so much coat she looked like a walking afghan :D Seriously though, I used to use a stripping comb, not one with blades  that just used to take out the dead, woolly undercoat as Val suggested. In the summer I used it 3/4 times a week because the shedding was almost permanent and in the Winter once a week on average. But you will find if you do it regularly, the shedding will minimise, although not stop all together. I used to find that the shorted haired ones shed more coat than the longer haired ones, for obvious reasons. :)

LOL mainly because most longcoats haven't got a lot(if any)undercoat

hi, thanks for your replys, i was just a bit worried as my other shepherds dont really malt, even my other long haried, only usual times of the year, he is brushed daily and i use the wire rake brush then brush again with the bristle one to give a sheen. this doesnt make any difference to the shedding, but at least now i know it is normal. thanks

MM, my last bitch, that we lost this year, had like a "cotton wool" undercoat and although I certainly wouldn't describe her as long haired, (she's the longest coat I've had) she was "scruffy"...in every sense :P

The old boy that we had, came to us at 6 months with a very short coat, no undercoat whatsoever, bald undercarriage and he never did develop an undercoat, he used to hug the fire and loved the heat for obvious reasons :)
