Topic Dog Boards / Showing / deep staining on westie paws help?!!
- By tinar Date 24.10.05 17:00 UTC
Hi.  My friend has recently re-homed a 4 year female show dog (westhighland white terrier) whose owner was unwell and had been unable to care for her recently.  When he picked her up she had very deep yellow staining on all her feet and her skirt from where she had been in a wooden kennel.  Over time and care of grooming and two washes with just water on her bottom half over the last two months the yellowing on the skirt and the back paws has decreased dramatically however the front paws are a yellowy-reddish colour all the way down the the skin.  There is nothing wrong with her paws as she had been checked with the vet and her nails are fine.  It looks almost like a creasote type staining on her paws.  She is entered in a show in November (which hopefully he can go to) and it will be the owners first show and her first show in over a year.  Does anyone know any shampoo or lotion that can help or any advice as to whether the hair should be cut back to help?  The staining is all the way down to her skin, bless her and therefore trimming will not reveal any whiter fur.  Any suggestions?

I would for the time being keep her feet as dry as possible.

Grass etc is terrible for causing staining as the foot is wet so much. The problem with westies is the coat is white plus the have a hard coat so it soaks up any colour.

I am having a nightmare keeping my lot clean just now as it has never stopped raining.

Hibiscrub and Malaseb are quite good for lifting the stain.   You can also try mouth gurgling peroxide. It is a very very small solution. Low enough we can use it as a mouth wash. You can pick it up and the chemist if you ask for it at the counter.  Dipped in a cotton ball and the area wiped and washed after 1 min. The stain will take a few attempts to lighten. If you can keep the feet dry and there is no porblem IE chewing then it will grow out again.

Talc or chalk on the feet ( the night before the show)  will help to hide it slightly.
