Hello everyone, this is my first post. A lady near me has to move and is not allowed to take her 5 month old bitch lakeland terrier with her, she is extremely upset, and so needs to rehome her...
I would like to know what the breed is known for, ie- personality, energy, etc.
She is a lovely girl, and deserves a great home, that i would love to provide.
I think they get on really well with children, make great family pets all round.
Dont know how well they do if left alone if you work?
but hopefully you can help this little girl xx
Hi Chrisjack,
Ring this lady as she does lakeland rescue, and breeds them.
She will be only too pleased as to advise you about them.
Jan rabin..0121 378 0911.[after 8pm] any night but monday and Tuesday
Hope this helps.
Jonelle
Thanks both of you- i'll call this lady later.
Does any one here own a lakie? or know of any lakie's?

The lakies I know are lovely little characters, full of life and energy, while still being gentle and friendly. I find them more biddable and less highly-strung than my Irish Terrier, and they seem to get on better with other dogs than many other long-legged terriers do. However, they are terriers so they will chase anything small, dig holes in your garden and generally get themselves into lots of mischief :) - but that is part of their charm.
Hi Chrisjack,
I am on the midland Lakeland Terrier club commitee.
Where do you live?
I have many lakie contacts, and we have just had our champ show recently.
The lady i told you about is great and really knows her stuff.
Has the lady concerned not contacted her dogs breeder as that should be her first port of call?
Jonelle
oooo your champ show was held at where i go to ringcraft :D ;)

hi jonelle. I live in mid-wales, this lady actually came to vets with the dog, where i work, when she was 5 weeks old! She told me that she bought her off a farmer, and was told she was a border terrier, so i had to inform her that she was actually a lakeland!
So no, she has not got back in touch with breeder, and is relying on me & my mum to find a suitable home. So this is why im wanting some background on the breed really, thanks-
chris
Hi Chrisjack,
Are you absolutely sure its a full lakeland and not a cross as there are many farmers who cross lakies with borders?
Do ring Jan as she will be a great help.
I was at meeting last night for the club and was telling them about your post and they all said was it full lakie.
Have you any other dogs?
And if you do decide with advice to give her a go then your first port of call would be to purchase a small crate,as no-one in lakies is without one.
Jonelle
Hi Jonelle
Why do farmers cross borders with lakelands? Is there a special reason for this?
I was just wondering as I have a border x lakeland.
Sarah x
Hi Sarah,
They cross the two because for some reason they reckon they make the best workers when crossed.
Jonelle
Hi sarah,
You dont know me but i know of you through Dale and Steve Bowcott, with the Spinones.
Bet thats got you thinking eh?
Jonelle
she looks like a lakie, but dont really know... she doesnt have as much hair on top of her nose, but she definitley has a lakie face and conformation- a gorgeous light tan/apricot colour!
Have to ring jan tomorrow night, as she is out till then.
Yes- im going on ebay now to bid on a crate!
She is half housetrained, but has not yet been on a walk! She needs socialising with other dogs as i dont think she has seen another dog yet...
keep ypu posted, thanks jonelle..
just spoke to jan from the club, some good advice- to be firm from start & crate her, we are collecting her sunday a.m.
When we went to her house- found out it had been condemed, and thats why they were moving! horrid and damp...she had been fed on cat food as thats what she likes! its crazy that people like this can own dogs, and im shocked that with such an upbringing she is such a lovely girl, with a relatively calm temperament- for a terrier puppy.
Any suggestions on the dog socialisation? dont want to scare her at such a critical age...
Hi Chrisjack,
Poor baby, sounds like she hasnt had a good start, and sounds a lovely girl.
Hopefully all about to change.
Give her a little while to adjust to her new home and then enrol at good training class both for socialisation and obedience.
Go slowly with her if you suspect she hasnt mixed and remember above all she is a terrier, and they can be fiesty.[the calmness could be down to her home conditions,so she may perk up when she finds her feet]
Maybe if you have some friends who have gentle dogs she could meet after she has settled a little, but do it on lead so as you are both in control of situation.
I hope she works out for you,as they are lovely charactered dogs.
Talk to your trainer when you enrol and explain the situation and they should give you plenty of guidence and allow her space with other dogs if needed, and be able to monitor her progress with you.
Fingers crossed for both you and her.
Jonelle.
hello again! My lakie is here! She is settling in fine, she's only been here for 6hours and she's sleeping in her open crate....
Cats are not impressed at all, but she just wants to play- bowing all the time & wagging her tail- but its not working!
Hopefully they'll get used to her.
Seen as though we have to be firm with her-tonite she'll be in the lounge (crated), and we are moving to the farthest away bedroom so we cant feel sorry for her whining!
Anyone with any tips?
cheers, : )

Hi
if she hasn't been crated before over night, then expect the whining for a few nights! But you have to be strong (as long as you definately want to crate her) I know it is hard, but try not to let her out whilst whining only when she is quiet ( as all the hard work you have put in will be forgotten and she thinks that if she whines you give in and the whining will just get worse!) With our pup it was only about 3 days that he whined and is fantastic now. Just be strong, remember it in her interests ( Safe, no wires to chew etc) good luck

jonelle, I've only just seen this; gosh it's a small world!! Lol :D Yes I know dale and Steve and amber and Bella their spinones, the people that bred their spins also bred our wheatens and they help at the ringcraft that I go to, where the lakie show is held!!!!! Now that's a big circle! LOL :D :D :D So what have dale and Steve been saying about me?!

:D
Sarah xxxxx
well her first night (last night) was brill! she whined for half hour then- silence! till 7.30 when i got up- and she wasnt bursting for a pee either- took her about half hour to go toilet in garden.
Had first jabs- and all clear from vet.
Hates the lead, but will try now on a walk- i dont pull her at all yet.
Still mad with the cats- so im just distracting her, everytime she gets too excited and barks.
She seems to be settling well so far- hope i get my cats back tho'...
Hi Sarah,
Dale and Steve have had only good things to say about you,so youre safe[lol]
Coincidence again is that when you started showing your wheaten pup you were in the junior handling class at sutton coldfield c.s show in feb this year and i was the ring steward.
I love Bella and Amber, and my boy loves them too.
They sent him a pressie off two jumbones for his win on saturday.
Its a small world.
Jonelle
OMG this is getting really weird!! Lol :D God I remember that it was my first show and my handling was terrible!!! Lol

Im glad I have improved! :D I am also glad that dale and Steve said nice thing otherwise there would have been trouble!! lol Yes amber and Bella are lovely, well they must be cause I wouldn't spend 1/4 of an hour in the
pouring rain in the lake district playing with amber if I didn't love her!! :D :D :D Your boy did brilliantly didn't he?! I hope he enjoyed his jumbones!
Sarah xxxxx
seen as though my old thread has popped up, i just want to let the people who helped me out, how my pup was, after a week now, 'flo' is excelling at being a true terrier! constant energy, digger, chaser, too clever, confident etc etc
But also she is perfect in every way, she is very nervous around other dogs- thinks they are going to eat her! She's fine with puppies but not adults, once they walk away- she wants to play... but its too late then!!
Hopefully she'll get there and not get scarred along the way- so glad i went and gave her this chance, thanks for the help!

Hi Crissyjack,
Im so pleased she seems to have settled in with your family.
She has so many new things to get used to and learn not to be afraid of, as she didnt have the best of starts by the sound of things.
Its wonderfull when they get a second chance in a better home.
Just remember if you need any more help [in the breed] ,both myself and jan are only to pleased to help, and there are many many experienced people on here for dog advice in general.
Maybe you would like to join the midland lakeland terrier club, then you can be amongst others of the same breed.
Best wishes Jonelle
Hi Sarah,
He sure did enjoy his jumbones.
He thinks the italian girls are his hareem.
Think its the beard thing as he has one too.
I heard about the mass gathering of spinones and wheatens, and it sounds like you all had fun.
Told Dale i had been winding you up online.[lol]
Best wishes Jonelle
