Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 7 wk old pups with diarrhea

Hi

I have 4 pups that are all healthy i.e runiing around playing etc but they have diarrhea.I have spoken to my breeder regarding this who advised me to reduce slightly there intake of food and add a scramble egg (without milk of course) to each meal to help the pup poop to bind and return to normal, it seems strange to me for them to now have diarrhea because when i we started to wean them they had none. The pups where last wormed at 5 wks .

There is no blood in the diarrhea and as i said the pups are fine in themselves..... any suggestions ???

Are you still giving milk.  In my expereince once the bit6ch is no longer feedign the pups regularly they start to be come less tolerant of milk, evn the puppy formula, as |I suppose theri bodies no longer require it.

Coccidia can cause loose stools or even diarrhea without blood. Often a mild case will clear up on its own but more stubborn cases can be helped with 7 days of a Sulfa drug from the vet. Coccidia is normally present in most puppies' systems but can get a stronger hold under periods of stress (moving, weaning, chills, etc) and can then start to cause symptoms.

Canned pumpkin helps firm up loose stools but water-diarrhea should be treated by the vet because young puppies can dehydrate quickly. If the pumpkin helps to firm things up to at least a pudding like consistency, you can keep the puppies well hydrated and the electrolyte balance correct by adding a tsp. of baking soda and a tsp. of salt to each litre of water. Another thing to do is feed a tbsp. of plain yogurt to each puppy for a week after weaning. We used to battle loose stools with every litter and no vet could find any reason. We started adding plain yogurt at weaning and the problem has disappeared! I think it has something to do with getting the healthy bacteria numbers high enough in the gut to properly digest solid food. Good luck. :)

I would agree with your breeder about reducing the food slightly in case this is causing it - if you give too much it goes straight though without being digested properly.  Don't worm them again until the dire-rear stops.
