can anyone tell me how you know if a pup is going to be a tiny,in the litter there is three very small pups and two big pups, when i purchased the mum the breeder told me she does throw tinys in the litter, but im not sure if you can tell if they are tinys or not,do you have to wait and see the growth of them or is there some sort of way of telling?

I don't know if it's an old wives tale, but I was told that you should look at the size of the feet :D The bigger the feet, the bigger the dog ;)

What research have you carried out on that Brainless?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.10.05 13:38 UTC
Straw poll only, especially with ref to men with small feet :D

Maybe more research needs to be done before making such sweeping statements? ;)

What breed, what size are the pups?
- By echo [gb] Date 23.10.05 13:48 UTC
The foot gauge size doesn't work with all breeds.  Some of the smaller breeds have big feet for their size as puppies.  I am awaiting a consensus of opinion on the other gauge though regarding the male of the species.

I need to do more investigations Echo before I comment.  My experience is a little out of date and things may have changed in the past 12 months! :)

Sorry these weights were at 3 days old,mum wouldnt let me weigh them at birth she was very protective and i didnt want to stress her too much but is fine with it now.So would have been a little smaller at birth.

My expereince was in the 80's and 90's and not that extensive, but enough to know size of feet is a poor guide to anything else :D

Debs my puppy experience is that birth weight, or even size at 8 weeks bears no relation to the adult size.  I've had many smallest pups grow into the biggest adult in the litter, and enormous pups grow into average sized adults. :)

My little teeny weeny runt of the litter has turned out to be the biggest of them all at 15 months old.  I would never have believed it as he was so tiny when born.

In a litter of Sibes I bred I had pups from 6ozs to 20 ozs. Average in breed usually around 16-18ozs.
The tiny one never grew above 14 inches. She was tested for any abnormalities and found to be 100% healthy just absolutely tiny for her breed. There were 8 in the llitter and all but her are of average size.

Hi,
When picking out my dobe (at 4 1/2 weeks) he was of average size, Large feet but average size. Infact all the pups had large feet. When we picked him up he was slightly larger than the average dobe of that age (along with a few of the others from the litter)  Now at 18 weeks he is rather large! Weighed him yesterday and he is now 25 Kilos i couldn't beleive it and he is about 24" from shoulder to floor. He isn't fat, just Solid. So the answer to your question is probably no you can't always tell what size a pup will be. :-)

In my girls litter all the puppies were of a size, there was one girl that was slightly bigger than  the rest of the girls and I fully expected her to be a big girl when I met up with her a six months. She has in fact turned out to be a tiny bit smaller that the rest of the girls. You could compare it to birth weights in babies I suppose, my eldest daughter weighed in 8lbs and at 11 years old is standing 5ft 3 and has always been well above average on the centile charts and my youngest who weighed in at 9lb 10 and has always been slightly below average on the centile charts and is never going to be as tall as her sister.  I think it's just a matter of waiting to see.

I have Akita's, and I'm not sure if it's just with Akita's but they have a knuckle on the leg just above the paw, the bigger this is I've always witnessed the bigger the dog!

In Pomeranian's I was told years ago to look at the nose leather, if it was tiny they'd be small.  Didn't always work out that way though :d
