i aggree with Sam. I would only breed if and once I had done my homework, as the object of the excersise should be to breed puppies that will if not be an improvement on their parents, at the very least should be ultra typical and healthy. You need to see which heriditary tests are appropriate for the breed. You don't say whether you show your bitch, most Stud dog owners of repute will not allow their dogs to be used on poor quality (show wise, I am sure she is a wonderful companion) bitches.
If you only want to breed a companion for her you will find yourself very out of pocket, a litter can cost you in the region of £1500 when Stud fees, health screening, the best of food and all the ancillary equipment is taken into account. Then there are registration fees. There is also no guarantee that you will find a ready market for your pups, being an unknown quantity, this is where a Stud dog owner can be helpful, if he is happy with what you are doing. Also you have an ongoing responsibility to your pups. If the chosen homes do not work out, or have problems training, you could end up having to rehabilitate, and find a suitable home for puppies that come back. there are several such problems of this nature mentioned in other letters to this list. Se also my reply to 'breeding' and 'I want to stud my bull terrier'! You will also need aprox 3 months to look after and rear the pups, can you commit this much time, they are a round the clock project!
