Hi guys, my EBT, had a big op earlier this week and is still recovering. He is in a lot of pain and walking is extremley difficult at the moment. Coaxing him to the toilet is a nightmare and helping him manouvre himself into the right postion (with an elizabethan collar on!) in his bed , he just growls the whole way! He has never made a grumble at me in his life (hes 14 mths) and I don't know whether to ignore or shout at him as I know he is in a lot of pain. His op was a bit touch and go and he stayed at the vets for a couple of days. He's just come home and I don't know if he is just a bit disorientated. Help!! Clare

If he is in that much Pain, I would give the Vet a ring.

He's just been discharged from the vets!The vet said he would be very uncomfortable as he has just had a major op.

Clare, there is a difference between discomfort and pain. Most dogs ignore discomfort, but if in real pain will let you know.

When bitches have a hysterectomy (sp),this is a major op, they bounce back very quickly. One of mine jumping a gate the day after the op! I would have a word with the vet and ask for some painkillers for a few days, or ask if the vet would check your dog out, just in case there is an infection.

Hi Claire, i hope he's okay, did your vet give him any painkillers, i feel sure myself that after any major surgery he's going to be pain, and i feel letting a dog jump a gate after a major operation is abit careless on the poor dog, major damage could have been caused.  Every dog is different just like people how they handle pain, if your worried though Claire have a speak to your vet.  i'm thinking of you through this horrible time, with bruno and julius.

Have the vet check him, but remember that strong painkillers encourage a dog to over-exercise and possibly do damage. There's a reason for pain - it's to stop further damage occurring.

The bitch wasn't 'allowed' to jump the gate. She was in the garden and saw a friend. She is always jumping and went before my ex could stop her. She was only taken out into the garden on a lead after that (after VERY strong words from me) What I was trying to say when I posted that is that I think that the OP's dog is probably in more pain than the vet realised when they discharged the dog from their care. I know that my vets don't discharge dogs until all stitches have been removed and they are happy that I am happy that everything is ok.

Hey guys he has been given painkillers and antibiotics. Have to say that he seems much better in himself this morning. Both my dogs have been operated on this week. My boxer is being the perfect patient but the other one is giving me hell!!!!!! I have spoken to the vet this morning and we are bringing him in before 12.00 so to put my mind at rest. Thanks guys. Hey Susan, went to the vet and he seems pretty happy with everything. Julius hasnt growled anymore, thankgod! We think he was a bit disorientated just having spent the last 2 days at the vets and then having us fuss all over him!!!!!Thanks for the replys everyone, much appreciated. Kind regards, Clare

Susan, I should have explained it better in the first place ;) Clare, I'm glad he's feeling a lot better. It is a big worry when things don't work out as you expect, but all dogs are different and will react differently. We all do our best by our dogs :D
