Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Help! What is the best lead?

Please can anyone advise what is the best type of lead to use on a Great Dane? He is not at his full strength right now but is still incredibly strong. I see many different types but im unsure which will be the best to control him and stop him pulling so much.

Flat collar, medium length lead that is thin enough so you can shorten it around  your hand if you want to.

No lead, collar etc will stop your dog from pulling though. To do THAT, train him off lead to walk to heel, and reward him every few steps for being next to you.

Progress to doing it on a loose lead in the ssame place and then go to pavements etc.

You CAN use someting that prevents him from pulling, for the times you CANT be training, but if you use those exclusively (headcollars, harnesses etc), they wont ever teach him not to pull.

I use the leather training leads for both danes, very strong and can be shortened or lengthened depending on the surroundings.

And if you have to they are excellent to use with dogmatics, clip one end to the collar and one end to the dogmatic. (So you are not totally relying on the DM only if needed).

I use a round soft but very strong lead, i rap it around my hand when i want to reel him in/walk to heel, but i am actually thinking about a handle and clip lead as his at the height now that i could really use one! How olds your boy?? :)

He is a year old, we just got him last month. Whoever had him neglected him and god knows what else, he is so skinny and we have been trying to put weight on him but its taking time. He was very scared at noises when we first got him but he is amazing now. Only thing we are worried about now is what he is like with strangers so we will go slow on that one.

If you just want to manage him when you're out and about, a Halti or other head collar would be the best bet.

This will only work when he's wearing it though, and won't teach him to walk to heel without it.

But some people who don't compete in any working discipline and just have their dogs as pets, don't mind that and have no problems using a Halti for the whole of their dog's life.

Thanks Mygirl for the tip about using a training lead attached to both collar and dogmatic I walk two GSD together and one I walk on  a dogmatic but only attach lead to it if another dog aproaches as I am recovering from a broken wrist ( after falling over a dog) .I ll try a lead with two trigger hooks on to save messing about and possibly losing control while I change my lead over.
many thanks I,m really glad I joined this forum I,m picking up new tips and you are all very freindly and helpful.
