Does anyone have experience of how long Petplan have paid for dietary food to dissolve struvite crystals in dogs?

My golden retriever seems prone to them - the vetshave advised he needs to remain on the food (Royal Canin Urinary food) for the rest of his days.  Whilst I don't expect Petplan to pay for this food forever (would be nice) I'm curious if anyone else has had experience of this, and if so how long Petplan have paid.

Thanks
Tim

Tim

I am sure Pet-plan doesn't cover foods in any way at all, checked all my policies and it always seems to be an exclusion.

they pay for the food for struvite crystals - they have from experience so far anyway and it is in my policy wording that they will.

I am insured with pet plan and my GSD suffered the same as yours. They paid for food whilst it was required. Gabi had 2 bouts of this problem and we noted that the problem occured always when she was on heat. We decided to have her spayed and also changed her diet to BARF. Since then she has not had the problem of struvite. Now we don't know if it was the spaying or her new diet but who cares it worked. On telling the vet she said that sometimes a change of diet can help, even though she was not a fan of BARF. We also started giving her mixed veg tablets and garlic and fenugreek as advised by Dorwest Herbs. All in all it worked and I'm delighted.

Hi Gaby

Never heard of BARF (sounds interesting, but not appetising!!)

Ollie is a dog and has been neutered so don't think it's that.  I changed his diet after the first bout - went from James Wellbeloved on to Royal Canin - so think the vet is right is a permanent thing.  Just curious re Petplan because I am in dispute with them over DAP diffusers which they paid for for over a year and have now refused to pay. My case is with the financial ombudsman at the moment, and early indications from them look promising.

Barf is raw meat and bones feeding. Gabi was on Royal Canin dried food before the switch. Barf is a natural way of feeding and very different from any other.Switching from one brand of ready prepared food to another probably would not do it. I did not do it gradually either as all the info available said it was not necessary. Far from it being unappetizing Gabi loves it and knawing on the raw bones gives her added entertainment. You do however have to do a bit of studying to get the combination of food right. Just put barf into the search on this site to see other peoples comments. There are also lots of books on the subject.
