Hi,
Just wondered if anyone else has problems with the Halti Harness. I have a 2yo German Shepherd who pulls so much I can hardly hold her back on a normal lead. The only thing I can use to take her out is the Halti, but I don't like it because a) she still pulls, so instead of her pulling from her neck, she pulls from her nose and acts like she's going to break her neck any minute!! and b) the strap around her nose pulls up towards her eye, and looks extremely uncomfortable. Does anyone else have these problems, and if so, how have you rectified them?
Thanks in advance.
Jayne.
Hi,
The halti head collars wont stop any dog from pulling, only training will do that.
You have to teach the dog that pulling gets her no-where. ie every time she pulls you stop and wait for the lead to go slack. even if this is every few steps or even every step. It may take you ten times as long to actually get anywhere but eventually the dog will learn pull = walk stopped. I have a 9mth sled dog ( born to pull) and have found that i am seeing a difference in him, alot less pulling now although he still does at times.
The key is perseverance and persistance. do it every single time and you will get there in the end. after all you have 2 years of pulling on lead to correct so it wont just happen in a week or two. :)
Hi
It sounds as though you are using the halti headcollar which fits around the dog's head. Halti also do a body harness and the control point for this is the front of the chest. I have tried it out on my strong GSD cross and was very impressed.
The harness is unlikely to train your dog not to pull but it can be a usefull tool until the training takes effect. If you do a search on the forum I am sure that you will find a few threads that offer excellent advice on how to make walking your dog a more pleasurable experience.
