Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Can a phantom cause mastitis

Hi,

One of my girls was mated around 6 to 7 weeks ago, we are sure she is not in whelp however in one nipple she seems to have mastitis??? Its not too big but hot and hard, the rest of her nipples are very large but no sign of any mammary development.

So i suppose my question is, can a bitch get mastitis if she is a) not in whelp and b) not producing milk?

Humans, even men can, so I assume a bitch can.

The safest thing is probably to get her checked out by your vet in case she needs treatment.  Some bitches do not show that they are in whelp until a few days before they are due whilst others look fat from around four or five weeks

I agree with Kerioak, any problems with the milk ducts can be very serious and would see a Vet about them, all the best, Dawn.

I would seek a vets advice.   I had a bitch that had a phantom
and she had milk. I had to give her some galastrop I think it
was called to take the milk away.  You should see the vet as
she will probably needs some anti-biotics. She could get quite
poorly if she develops a fever from the mastitis.
