That's a classic!
I once had a dog that ran to the left, so I guess he was left handed.
I honestly don't think such a thing exists, but what a wonderful question, we could do with a few more like that one!
God Bless!
I think it does exist. Last night at training, our homework for the week was to find out whether our dogs were left or right handed. The trainer who has 4 dogs said 2 of hers are left and the other 2 right.
We've just done an experiment with Poppy by putting a biscuit under an upturned cup to see which paw she tried to knock the cup away with, each time it was left.
So I suppose I've answered my own question. Sorry to have wasted your time.
Oh Harry it was def no waste of time, certainley cheered up my dull evening :D I will try your experiment with my dynamic duo, and let you know the result :)

There might be a difference, I don't see why not. It doesn't have the same implications for dogs as it does for us and would be more difficult to test the other things that depend on right or left side of the brain :)

Wow, who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks! You learn something new every day!

Fagan must be left handed, or left "pawed" as that is the foot he always gives me first to dry :D :D

Judging by the amount of times my Tibetan Mastiff puppies teases my old Shar-Pei by patting her on the bum with his paw, he's right handed.
Handedness is common in animal species and has been observed in species as diverse as fish, toads, birds and chimpanzees. Some species are even predominatly left handed, like lemurs. Even molecules can be left or right handed, so why not dogs?

I've heard of testing which paw they raise first and that sort of thing, one day must give it a go!

I guess my dobe's right-pawed, that's the one he always uses to tell me I'm not scritching him enough :D I think Opi must be ambidextrous - she doesn't use her paws much except when I throw things to her, and she always tries to catch them with both paws!!
