Do the KC publish a list of names taken, so you know when you apply, that the name hasn't gone already? If not, why not? I would lvoe to know before I apply for a name, that iot hasn;t gone already. Some names I think to myself "no, that'll be gone already" and my litter application will take even longer.

Thanks anyone.

The only reason you won't be granted a name you've asked for is if it already someone's affix ( or it's too rude or inappropriate :D). The KC do publish a book containing all the registered affixes which you can buy from the KC site. You do have a chance of 2 names on the registration form & can allow the KC to choose a name if those are not acceptable.

So how come someone once told me they applied to call their puppy Hooray Henry and it wasn't allowed, and about a year later my friend called one of her puppies, which I bought, Hooray Henry?? Same breed and everything! (would have put a puzzled smiley but don't know how to do them!)

Friend of mine particularly wanted a name and it was refused. I said reapply and she got it???????

This is one of the reasons why having a registered affix is advantageous. The presence of the affix ensures that the overall name is unique. Otherwise you have to be very very inventive to come up with unique words as names.

When we got our two dogs. The first one already had her name chosen. Sweet Little April Joy. The second one the breeder gave us a choice of four and we chose Thats My Girl. Not too posh but just right I think.

Is it easy to change your dogs kc name? Is it just a matter of an application form or do they have to go through the breeder and stuff?

It'll cost you £30.00 & has to be for certain reasons only & within 3 months of you owning the dog. Imagine the chaos if everyone could change their dog's name on a whim!
(Have a look on the KC site under registration forms)

The KC will send you an Affix book within a few days it costs £8, you can also e-mail the KC with a list of choosen names prior to registering and ask if any of them are still free.  They will reply the following day and tell you if a name/names are available. You can then register your name or Affix online.  The reason that a name will be rejected and then be ok weeks, months or years later is because an Affix probably hasn't been renewed so the name can be used again.   If you buy an Affix you can practically have free range of most other names before or after it.
