Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / less poo on nature diet

i have a new ckcs puppy we got her on thursday and she was being fed on beta puppy and in the first day she pooed loads but now we have started changeing her to nature diet and she poos nowhere near as much, is this normal? my other cavalier has always been fed on nature diet so i have never noticed with him.

My 7 month old CKCS came to us on Pedigree (tinned) and did about 5-6 poos a day, she's now on Nature's Menu (similar to Nature Diet) with a handful of JWB mixed in for the crunch, and does about 3 poos a day.  So I guess it probably is normal, perhaps the ingredients in ND & NM are more digestable than some of the others.

The reason si, that foods like Nature Diet are NOT packed with fairly indigestable fillers like Pedigree are!

This is also the reason that you generally need to feed LESS of the better food than you would something like Pedigree! More of it is actual FOOD!

I have always thought it normal for a dog to poo about as many times a day as they are fed.  Mine have always pooed about twice a day as adults (they are fed twice a day) but when they were pups being fed 3/4 times a day they pooed a corresponding number of times, so maybe you would have found the number of poos reducing anyway :)

Hi - yes this is normal.. It's because Beta has undigestible fillers in it and rubbish which just comes out the other end.  ND is much more digestible to the dog and you will find the poos smaller (and easier to pick up!).

My dogs have been fed Beta for years and just poo the amount of times they are fed.  You may call it "fillers" I call it fibre and my dogs have proved to be a lot healthier for it :)  Although it may suit some dogs on "small poo foods" they were unable to empty their anal sacs without help and one got so constipated she "wept" as she pooed.
Two nice, bulky, well formed poos per dog a day are no harder work to shovel up than two little hard ones :)

Isabel,

Poo "size" has little to do with emptying anal glands.  It's the firmness of the poo that matters - soft poos do not good, firm poos do.  Big or little - does not matter.

Sorry, I disagree :).  A small poo, no matter how hard is not going to apply any "squeeze" to the anal sacs which lie outside the rectum, that has been my dogs' experience over the years anyway.  I agree soft poos will not work this function either, which is where a decent amount of fibre comes in, creating a bulky but firm poo :)

We have only been feeding ND since Sunday, but already we have half the poo's we had with Pedigree, Jed has ND for breakfast, tea and supper, and a raw chicken piece for lunch to give him a good jaw work out and hopefully help to keep his teeth cleaner. Nice firm motions not too big not too small, pretty much as perfect as he is!! :D
