I have my first litter of puppies (sbt's) and they were whining at the back door when I let mum out.I thought they were whining for her,so I let her back in however they continued to whine and it seems that they are whining to go out and explore.
Would it be ok for them to go in the garden for small periods of time?It is all secure and the only other dog to have used the garden is mum.
I would stay with them at all times during their time outside and there is nothing for them to hurt themselves on as it is flagged and barked(for childrens slide, swing, trampoline etc).
They were 4 weeks old on saturday and are all happy healthy pups.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
I think that would be a great idea to let the pups play out, only one problem tho, when they go out they dont want to come back in, let them stretch there little legs and run free.

Thanks Rosco Jane.
Next time they are sitting whining, as they have done a few times I will leave the door open and let them explore!!!!
Your welcome, you will see that they enjoy there play, keep the garden clean and safe and you should not have any problems. except trying to get them back in to bed.
Oh yes let them out and stretch their legs, it is such a pleasure to watch them exploring things only thing to watch out for are your plants and shrubs. sit in the garden and watch them you will enjoy it so much

I would say it is essential to get them outside for fresh air excersise and socialisation with the outside world, different textures, the wind etc.
This is the age mine start going outside for increasing periods of time. In fact they have a kennel and run for this very purpose so that I can have them out for a couple of hours and soem can seleep some can play as they like.
A playpen and some shelter will make life easier over the next few weeks, as once they ahve been out they will not want to stay restricted ot their indoor area for long :D
Be careful you may think your garden dog proof but it amy not be puppy proof (hence the dog run or large puppy pen) as they can get through the tiniest gaps especailly under feces and through iron work gates etc.

They should be fine and it will be really good for them to explore, but make sure you've got eyes in the back of your head! Also watch the weather as puppies can get a chill easily. If it's like it is here at th moment - sunny and mild - it's ideal for them.

My garden has no plants or bushes or any greenery at all really apart from a small square of grass (I am definately not the green fingered type) and I have been putting chicken wire over any possible escape routes today. They have been out for 15 minutes before and loved it so tomorrow I am off to B&Q for some wood to make a pen which I will attach to the front of my childrens wooden play house (waste of money otherwise as kids never use it.)
Thanks again for all your advice it is very much appreciated.
