I am sure that many of you on here have more than 1 dog. We have just been told that the breeder of our Goldie, is having a litter in the next few weeks. The sire is the same dog, (good temprement) and he had told us we can have pick of the litter (we want a girlie this time)....
Never had 2 dogs before I am sure we will be ok, any advice 2 dogs people can give me????,my present goldie is nuetered so no accidents, but the chance of having a half sister to him and a link to him, just seems to good an opportunity to miss....
It also means that we will be picking her up (if all goes well) week before xmas!! I know not a good time, but we dont have any kiddies, or kiddies that will visit and usually have doggie xmas's anyway, hey ho, am I mad ????
Not mad at all! What a great xmas prezzy! :D Going from having 1 dog to 2 is great as they have each other to play with, also your little fluffy pup will have a snuggle buddy!

We brought our pup home in May to join our other dog. We certainly have no regrets and the two dogs are the best of friends and great company for each other. The initial settling in period was quite stressful, trying to make sure that both dogs got individual attention etc but once we'd established a routine things became much easier. However, we'd never had such a young puppy in the house before as our other dog was 6 months when he came to us and was somehow housetrained despite living his entire life outdoors (only one wee in the house) so that probably added to our stress as a lot of it was new to us.
I don't see getting the pup at Christmas as being a problem as long as your routine is pretty much the same as during the rest of the year and you don't have lots of visitors and the like. Don't envy you the housetrainig in the dead of winter, though... :D :D
>>anyway, hey ho, am I mad ????
In a word, yes :D BUT I would never have one dogs on its own now. We have 3, an aunty and a neice(we thought the same, nice to have family but they are sooo different!) and then my wire boy, and its pretty calm sometimes but when they get going it is total madness!!! One barks and they set the others off, they have no concept of sharing toys(one has a toy so the other just have to get it which results in a noisy tug of war game!), taking all 3 out for a walk on the beach is chaos.. BUT its all great fun. Watching them interact together is great, the pup(wire boy) really misses the girls if we have been out for the day to a show or whatever, they all sit in front of the wire together and when we were in Scotland on holiday last month they all used to crash out in the boot together!
Good luck, whatever you decide, just remember 2 dogs is twice the mess, twice the noise, twice the weight when sitting on your knee but also twice the fun :D
we are thinking of getting a second dog as company for leo - my parents had two at one point, wasnt really out of choice as my nana died but after the first few days of madness they both settled down - stole each others beds / toys etc etc but they were so cute when they were snuggled up infront of the fire together - walking was fun too as one dragged and the other pulled lol but it was generally great fun we worried less about leaving them for a couple of hours or so when we had the two as well because they kept each other company.
Only thing for us is leo is an office dog and we dont own the office so not sure yet whether it will be possible to bring the two of them in

Go for it - you're in an absolutely ideal position to get your boy his little sister! It's lovely to have more than one dog and you already know what you're letting yourself in for. I had one dog for many years, but now would not be without two.
I personally like to have a least 2 years gap in age, but things don't always work out as you expect - my old girl's daughter died before she did and there was a 3 year gap. So I now have her and my 10 month old puppy and there's exactly a decade between them! My mum's friend has a 13 year old Cavalier and they had hteir daughter dump her Staffie pup on them - he's given the Cav a new lease of life.

Sounds good as long as your current dog is at least 18 months / 2 years old, or you might have trouble further down the line! :-)
hi just wondering what sort of trouble ,cheers
Thanks for your replies my boy will be 3 when she comes, and hopefully and keeping fingers crossed ( we were let down earlier this year with pup),she will come into our home around the time as my boys birthday, really spooky, when we contacted this breeder originally we had just lost our old lab of 14 and a half years, and our boy now, was born a day before we lost our old boy, everything seemed to click into place, really spooky,we had originally planned for a spring pup, but as they say fate has a way of telling you things.
Have decided that as xmas is only really 2 days, we can work around that no problem, just hope she enjoys her first xmas dinner...!!:)
>> our boy now, was born a day before we lost our old boy
Now isnt that strange as our kai was born the day before i lost my taz aswell .... "doodoo doodoo" are we entering the twiglet zone :D :D
