could you please tell me why people breed labradors without hips and eyes being tested, they can still register with the kennel club. Also they can advertise on champdogs. Surely it is irresponsible breeding. What do other people think.

Agree entiresly.  It is up to buyers to be educated abourt this, and if they refuse to buy from such breeders they will find they can't sell their pups, but sadly they can and many choose to save the not inconsiderable amount that these tests cost, as they obviously have no interest to ensure the welfare of theri breed.

Not just Labradors - it applies to any breed with known inherited problems.

Unfortunately the Kennel Club allow puppies to be registered from parents who are not health checked.  If the KC would only register from health checked parents, I am sure it would help towards the situation.  Also it is amazing how people think that puppies who are on the KC register for sale think they are buying quality, when someone only has to pay to go on the list.

I always advise people to go to the breed club list, because I think most breed clubs will not allow puppies to be put on their lists unless the parents are health checked>(I hope all beed clubs do this anyway)

I know you've just had puppies, Velvet - I take it that your parents are hip and eye-scored?

Yes they have excellent hip scores dam 5 sire 9 and eye tested. Excellent temperment, or i would not have had a litter. I have also studed their genes.

LOL @ Kayc - just imagine black lab puppies swaggering along in their leather studded jeans - chewing the backside out of their litter-mates' genes!

All we can do, Velvet, is keep plugging away, advising people who come looking for puppies, that they MUST check that parents have been hip scored (with scores like yours or even lower, if pos) and with current good eye test certificates.

Someone posted on here that they enquired about hip scores for a German shepherd litter, I believe, and was told that "the puppies have hip scores of 2"
