Topic Dog Boards / Health / puppy lice?
- By moose [ie] Date 04.07.02 09:49 UTC
Hello

We have a 7 week old choc labrador puppy. She has lice. She was treated Tues pm with Stronghold but there are still lice on her (lots). On advice of vet nurse yesterday we gave her a dose of Frontline yesterday. There are still lice!

Does anybody know how long it takes for them to kick the bucket? And are these lice the same guys that humans can catch? We have had varied advice as to whether we could catch them too.

Many thanks

I'd be very interested in where you got a puppy with Lice ? and I certainly would be onto the breeder about it.
It seems a bit harsh to put all those differing things on the pup but your Vet should Know best.
I'd be tempted to bath the pup in some decent anti lice/flea shampoo and keep combing the fur, also they say tea tree shampoo is good, also you will have to treat your carpets and the dogs bedding.
I havent heard of dog lice going on people before have you got a cat? as cat fleas do go on people and can be a nightmare.
best of Luck.

Don't use tea tree oil on a clumber spaniel as it has made quite a few of them ill, with seizures etc.

Too many for it to be coincidence :(
- By issysmum [gb] Date 04.07.02 11:38 UTC
Kate that's awful. I swear by tea-tree and use it for virtually everything. Do they know why Clumbers specifically are having reactions?

Trust Clumbers to be awkward :D :D :D :D :D

Fiona

Just checked back and the tea tree oil seems to cause temporary paralysis in some clumbers - in some cases for as long as 24 hours. It may be that the actual numbers are very low and that all those who were affected reported it, but there was a definite trend.

We bought some new shampoo and when I checked the ingredients TTO was there and I decided (as an over anxious owner :D ) not to use it.

re why clumbers. Who knows

Hi there

Thanks for all your ideas. The breeder is here in Eire, near Moate. Infact he alerted us to the fact that she had lice, telling us that most pups have them. We now know thats a load of twaddle and that lice are in fact very rare these days. We won't buy from him again, but we have Moose now and I'd like her to be comfortable.

I spoke to the vet by phone today and he said we shouldn't have used the Frontline as well. Thats a bit annoying because I was wary of that but his own nurse suggested it. Oh well, can't be helped now. I asked about bathing but he advised against it as it will wash off the treatments. I have some tea tree oil so I'll wait another 24 hours to see what happens before I use some (diluted).

Some have said that dog lice are the same and human lice, they are all the same species. The vet has further confused me by telling me that puppy lice can't go to humans, but adult dog lice can. !!!

ps yes she is our first lab, altho hubby has had a lab/collie X before.

Poor little Moose :(

Like Mattie says try tea-tree oil or a tea-tree shampoo. If you use the oil put a couple of drops onto a comb and comb through his fur. That should help to kill the little bu**ers :D

The shampoo is also very good and it's really gentle on the skin. I use it on my baby without any problems and she's got excema.

Good luck,

Fiona

Another chocey baby called Moose.:D

Our baby Moose is now ten months old and has been a bundle of fun and mischief !

I think the tea tree solution sounds good. I use that on my lot especially for itchy skin.

Is this your first Lab ?

Is tea tree shampoo good for fleas too. I have no problems with them but I want to do all I can to prevent them. I give Lacey Garlic tablets and have used Frontline on her. Also how often would I need to use Frontline if I am giving her garlic as well? I would be grateful for your thoughts.

Thanks

As far as I know - tea Tree doesn't kill the wee beasties - but they don't like the smell and so are unlikey to jump onto the person/animal and as pet fleas can jump - i gues they're likely to jump off a treated animal - however that doesn;t deal with the eggs. If you have had a dog or cat with fleas you must also de-infest your house or they will simply come back. The eggs can lie dormant in carpets etc for months and months. You can get some spray from the vets - do your carpets, dog bedding sofa's curtains(if they hang on the floor) and any soft furnishings where the puppy may have been.

I remember once having had cats in our house who had fleas. We had left the house on a move although it wasn't sold and went back just a couple of weeks later to chuck furniture and stuff - the place was alive with cat fleas all living nicley in the carpet - it was disgusting.

HI guys

I cannot stress enough how important it is to dilute EVERY essential oil you use, whether for human or animal use.

I practiced aromatherapy years ago, and this was always impressed upon us.

I have used various essential oils not diluted, on myself, but you have to be reallly careful and I wouldn't recommend it unless under the guidance of a qualified professional.

The best dilute mediums to use are an oil such as wheatgerm (called a "carrier oil"), or even milk or water if the oils are slooshed around quickly.....they do disperse in water but quicly "reform" into "patches".

I used to de flea/tick my BSd with a mixture of tea tree, eucalyuptus and cedarwood oils, slooshed in water and stroked onto the fur with a cloth.

Best wishes

My daughter got head lice from school - disgusting, horrible things - and the vet reckoned they could go to the dog. Having used the conventional treatment on her to kill them, I started using a tea-tree shampoo with no reappearance of the lice. I ran out once and had thought what's wrong with going back to a normal shampoo now, it's probably just a coincidence. The lice were back within two weeks!:( Needless to say the tea-tree shampoo is back to stay now.

I was interested to see your comments on Tea Tree oil 9thM. I won't touch the stuff with a barge pole. years ago I had all sorts of trouble with an old Lab. I never managed to prove anything but It was enough for me!

I agree tea tree oil is not good for animals. I find it is best used for the purpose it was intended clearing bacteria. too many homeopathy treatments are being treated as an all rounder .
I use tea tree in water to gargle for sore throats and as an antiseptic for cleaning wounds .
I do not use it on dogs at all . I also do not recommend aloe vera shampoo for dogs I washed Berry with it when I got her first and she nearly scratched herself inside out .
Lots of human cures do not suit an animal so be very careful . It is much harder to cure an allergy then to get it .

I have some tea tree dog shampoo and have found it really good (not that they get a bath often) but getting a complex now about it
- By JaneS (Moderator) Date 04.07.02 22:13 UTC
No need to get a complex Sara :-) Lots of dog owners use tea tree oil shampoo & diluted essential oils on their animals with no ill effects whatsoever - I have been using it for years (& aloe vera for soothing any skin trouble :-) ) As with all things, no doubt some individual dogs (& maybe even particular breeds) can develop a sensitivity to this oil, but you can say this about virtually anything can't you? If you've been using the shampoo on your dogs & are happy with the results, then where's the problem?

Jane
- By mari [ie] Date 04.07.02 23:20 UTC
Hi Saraw I was not saying you should not use it .if it is ok then do by all means. It is as Janes say if it agrees then no problem
I just know some of the people that use it find they have chesty dogs .
I feel I should mention the things I know about .
Just in case someone is having a problem and dont realise it might be the teatree
Tea tree is great when used for the purpose intended . I just feel that in order to cash in some are not being open about the dangers in some herbal remedies, when they are used with other products.

Sara

If you've been using it and it's been working, then I wouldn't worry too much.

I won't use the new shampoo on TH, but I probably will on Carrie Hoover and Stinky.

To be honest I've only bathed TH once in 2 years and I used baby shampoo  She was absolutely fine.

- By SaraW [gb] Date 05.07.02 16:12 UTC
I will use it again - Sam has only had a couple of baths with it (in 2 years) and appeared fine although I'll keep a closer eye on him this time incase.
Sara :)

LynnT,

Lice are common in schools now. Unfortunately, it doesn't make much difference what you do if other children have lice, your child may catch them again.

HI Mattie

I have used Lavender oil with success too,and someone, I think it is Armitages "Good Boy", makes a talc which lasts for several months, smells gorgeous and has most of these oils in, plus i think Pennyroyal and maybe Citronella.

I would use say, 2 drops of each in about a pint of water, you can increase the dosage slightly if you like, and it will still be safe :)

Don't get it in the eyes though!!!!!

Best wishes

I know this won't get rid of them but it may help a little. Garlic caplets in his food everyday.
Comb comb comb comb. If he is in a bed boil wash his bedding and change it 2 or 3 times a day.
You could put tea tree in or on the bedding..

Let us know how you get on..

Dodson & Horrel do a dog strength garlic powder you mix directly in with their food. We are lucky enough to have an outlet near us so we buy direct. We have tried super market garlic powder, but our dog prefers the D & H.

My two daughters have had lice a total of 3 times since they started school. The coat pegs at school are too close for my liking! Anyway, I swear by tea tree oil shampoo and good old fashioned combing to get rid of lice. I would never put a pesticide on my childs head. We have always been able to get rid of them in a 1 1/2 - 2 weeks! The lice that is, not the children! :)

LOL Quinn,

No they take 18 years...

Quinn,

It's not the coat pegs. Lice are spread by direct hair to hair contact. I'm afraid this happens in schools. Children get close together at times.
