my ckcs male is 9 months old and the other day i caught him trying to mate my 9 week old girl is there anything i can do to stop this, i don't want him to hurt her but i really don't want to get him castrated as i have heard alot of bad things about doing that to cavs.

My sister-in-laws 11yr old castrated labrador is always trying to 'hump' my male utonagan pup. At the moment we keep a close eye & separate them as soon as the lab starts. Castration hasn't stopped him trying.

IMHO it probably has nore to do with dominance that sex! Only thing really is to ensure that the dog is allowed to show its doninance in other ways like winning tug games.

My dog used to do this to our puppy but now she gets her own back and humps him instead. The funny thing is she used to go mad when he did it to her but he doesn't seem to mind at all.......

What bad things have you heard about having a CKC castrated? When my CKC was a pup he was thin and had a few digestive problems, we had him done and he improved drastically and then lived to be the ripe old age of 14 even though he had a heart murmour from the age of 7.

i have been told by alot of people who have had cavs that when they have been neutered their coats have gone awfull and wooly, it has been so bad that some people have had to cut the hair off to control it.

Yes, his coat did get a bit thicker I suppose but it was always in good condition, sleek and shiny. Perhaps your vet would be able to advise.

I agree - a lot of doggie humping is showing the other dog who's the boss as bitches are as guilty of it as dogs.
HI VKBLUE
i had my spaniel boy castrated at six months because of him humping me, the kids and any soft toy he cud find!!,also cos he wud never come back to me once off the lead, the result was amazing, he instanly stopped humping us all, and he became very very obediant!!! But yes his coat did suffer, it went thicker and dryer looking, but for me personally this didnt matter as i gained a beautifully obediant loving (in the right way!!) boy. he is 9 next april, and very healthy, and very lively old boy.
