Anyone here from Yorkshire?  I might be moving there in a couple months' time, and I was wondering if the vets there are expensive or no?

Just got back with Remy (he has a bit of a stomach bug we think) and they charged me £45 to tell me that, give him a little sachet of electrolytes and an anti-inflammatory/antibiotic injection.  Seems steep to me - of that cost, £25 was the consultation fee, and I was only in there 10 minutes!

Whoa! that seems quite steep to me too.  How bad was the stomach bug?  If mine's been a bit D&V, so long as not too bad just starved her for 24 hrs

Im from Yorkshire, i cant really tell u if theyre expensive or not cos ive only ever lived in Yorkshire all my life. It did cost me £8 for some eardrops if that helps at all lol. And ive been quoted £35 for an ultrasound scan!

Minniedog, that sounds really cheap compared to the vet I go to down here!!

My little cat (little - read: fat!! :D) had cystitis a while back, and her bladder ultrasound was £60!

And Spender, I do agree with you on that - I would prefer to have a good vet, of course.  There is another vet in my town (or was, until she went back to Africa!) that was very cheap, I got quite a few rats neutered there and they even gave me discounts for it, but when it came to things like respiratory problems (again, rats) she was next to useless, so there certainly is a balance to find between cost and quality.  Still, a little less would be nice :D

I am, and the vets vary like everywhere else. :) My usual vet that I use for ill animals charge 3 times as much for vaccinations that the vet I use for routine stuff only.

I used to live in Ripon but now live in Catterick and have found a big difference in the prices. In Ripon a full set of puppy jabs was £38 and in Catterick it was £53.

At our cheap vets in Dewsbury full set of puppy vacc is just £15. :)

I live in ROtherham and ours comes to £25!

Marianne, I bet that's the same vets I used for Bess's puppy vaccs and to have my cats spayed. I think folk come from miles away they are so cheap. :-) Pity they don't do large animals and are so far away. :-(

I took Bess to our usual one in Halifax when she got mange, if I remember rightly 3 doses of Stronghold, some Piriton, and 2 consultations (no charge for the second ;-) ) was about £40

Hey Goldmali I too am in Dewsbury, I bet your talking about Richmonds?
They charge £8 for consultation fee which is quite cheap as vets up the road charge I think about 3 times as much.

Wow - thinking of moving to Yorkshire, I cannot go to the vets in Bedfordshire for anything and come out with a bill less than £50. The out of hours service is outragious, they run it for the area and the minimum charge between 10 pm and 8am just to walk through the door is £95

£25 consultation fee doesn't sound unreasonable to me.  The vet practice that is only a stones throwaway from where we live charges £23.00 for a consultation and that's in Yorkshire.  We pay £17.00 with our vets but have to travel half an hour's journey to get there.   Personally I would rather pay more for a good vet than less for a bad one.

Ours is £17.00 as well which i think is quite steep especially if there is nothing wrong and they are only in for a matter of minutes. Just my opinion though.

I was talking about £25 for vaccinations not consultations!

I'm in Rotherham too and there are two main vets to choose from- as usual the price varies between the two but (without remembering any figures off the top of my head) whenever I've spoken to other people regarding the prices I think the vets I use is in between price wise- not the cheapest but not the dearest either and as was said before I consider them a goods vets so I'm happy.

My sister GSD booster was only £12 in North Allerton, we pay about £38 here in Hampshire for Spice BC

I live in a small town about 20mins from selby/york and i have only been to vets once so far for some wormer and it cost me £7.50 for 2 tablets, not really sure of her prices yet but she is a lovely vet :)
- By Kash [gb] Date 15.10.05 18:20 UTC
Our vets charge approx £11 for a consultation, £17 for a vacc including consultation fee and again approx £7.50 for 3 Drontal Plus wormers.  Again as I said before- not the cheapest but not the most expensive either :-)

i'm in teesside, but couldn't tell you what my vets consultation fee is! This might give you an idea... A couple of months ago, i took my dog to get her anal glands done, she had antibiotics for her skin (where she'd been chewing), a steroid anti-inflammatory concoction jab (her skin was inflamed as she was having some kind of allergic reaction-think it was to my shampoo-normally use Groomers Primrose Oil, but my friend had borrowed it, and decided to go to New York forgetting to give me it back!), and i also got some wormer that i can't remember the name of (not drontal). I paid £24. I think the most i've paid, except for her spay (£80) were the initial pup vaccs. Can't remember what hers cost, but it was £50-£60 for my 6mth pup when we had him done...
