Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / the pill??
- By flower-bud [gb] Date 15.10.05 10:10 UTC
hi, i have just heard from someone that in the "show dog world" the owners will use the pill (human contraceptive) to stop their bitch coming into season, is this true, i think this is totally outrageous to mess with their seasons like this.

I would question the veracity of this statement - human ovulation and canine ovulation do not follow the same cycles, and one could put at risk a valuable bitch by using the human contraception.

There is an injection which can be used - maybe this is what someone was talking about.

hi, apparently it was the vet that told them to use the pill to stop the bitch comng into season for shows and to stop it getting caught pregnant. ridiculous. just shows what some pople will do!!

If it's true, I think that's a v dodgy thing to do.

Using hormonal treatments of any kind on a bitch has been shown to increase the chances of pyometra developing.

Not to mention the fact that the dosage of hormone in a pill has been carefully calculated to be the right amount for a human female, not a dog!

I own a young bitch who has had four seasons at 16, 20 and 18 week intervals, damned inconvenient for showing, yet I would never mess about with her seasons.  She has managed to do well in the shows she has been to, winning her JW and a CC and 2RCCs.

Now that I am planning to mate her in hopes of sorting out her cycles (and proving ehr will allow me to delay breeding from ehr until I am ready for my next puppy) and wanting her back in the ring by our club show at the end of April next year, what does she do, she has already gone nearly 26 weeks since the last season (good from health point of view) but unless she comes in in the next week I haven't a hope of getting her back in the ring by the club show with a Norwegian judge :(

Sadly this is what you get with choosing to show bitches, they are either in season, out of coat, or taking long sabaticals to ensure the next generation :D

And anyone valuing the reproductive capability of their bitch will not use this as often there are problems with fertility/cycles after it's use.

Absolutely!

I can't believe that a vet would suggest such a thing (If they did!) It amazes me some of the things that I hear nowadays. As stated by Lokis mum there certainly is an injection that can be given, though I would never myself mess around with a dogs natural cycle.

Let's hope that no-one gets any silly ideas from reading this post.................. if you do DON'T DO IT!!!

No vet is going to tell a DOG owner to use the contraceptive pill for WOMEN.

For a start, s/he is not gonig to make any money by suggesting this ;)

Seems like cloud-cuckoo land to me.

Yes,  I believe you are right!  What will they come up with next?

When I bred Burmese, the pill used to lengthen the time between seasons was OVARID, without this some Burmese would be inclined to be in season almost permanently as they don't really stop the cycle until mated  and an in-season Burmese is very noisy, very very! and would be at risk healthwise :(    Ovarid is used in the treatment of some human cancers ;)  it's a synthetic progestogen, perhaps this is what they are referring to?

Hi,

Poor Burmese! Glad I'm not one of those! Now that sounds more likely. Word of mouth always tends to take things out of context.
