Yesterday Paris rolled in something in a meadow.  Smells bad.  Fox? I don't know.

Bathed her with the last of the dog shampoo but as she was drying off I could still smell the smell.  Daughter was gagging (she does exaggerate) but it wasn't nice so poor dog went back in the bath and we used human shampoo (all we had) and Imperial Leather Shower Burst because we like the smell.  This morning dog looks gorgeous but still smells.  What can I do?

Tomatoes seem to have sa neutralising effect on bad smells including in the USA Skunk.

I would get some cheap Ketchup or bottled Passata from ASDA and try washing him with that and then again with shampoo.

Got the both tomato ingredients just need to pop out and get some shampoo.  Thanks

Poor dog thinks she is being punished, she hates baths.

My second eldest whilst staying with my dad rolled in fresh cowpats and they tied ther to teh clothes airer and hiosed her down and then bathed her, she never went near a cow pat in their presense again :D  She still loves to roll when out with me though :D

I think I've been lucky so far because this is the first time she's rolled in something. She's been hosed a few times as she often jumps in smelly ponds.  Last weekend she was hosed down and she doesn't like that but I still think she hates being bathed more. Can't understand it myself, :D

How hot do you have the water?  Our dog is not keen on baths that are luke warm or warm, but the other morning my daughter walked into the bath room and found her in the bath my daughter had left in the night before :rolleyes: ie a cold bath.  Last weekend she got dirty (she found a stagnant pond) so we ran a coldish bath for her and she didn't want to get out :D.

I would say it is just about or above tepid, certainly not warm.  I always think if she likes launching into freezing ponds on cold days she wouldn't like warm so it's not likely to be that. I think it goes back to the day we got her.  It was a long trip for her and she did a poo and fell back in it.  Only messed up her legs but the first thing that happened to this tiny mite in her new home with strange people was to stand her in the bath and wash her legs.  I am sure it goes back to that.  Also the shower is quite noisy

Goodness what a bunch of softies. Ours gets a cold hose! Oh and the tomato sauce works without recourse to shampoo. My pet hate is she will insist on dabbing fox poo behind her ears, which results in her collar getting covered and I then cannot get the lead on without getting the disgusting stuff on me and then it is SO easy to transfer it everywhere :eew:

I think that using the hose is suitable 'punishment' as it put Hook off rolling in things. Truffle hates it but will stand there glowering at me, until I get the towel and she loves that bit :) Also Im not in to cleaning the bath/ shower as well as the dog at least this way I just have to hose down the terrace. Confess that it dosent work so well in winter when I have to retrieve the hose from the garage first, but it lives out all summer.

Shez swa I can totally empathise with you - our xchow is nearly 13yrs old & still enjoys a good roll in rotting matter.His worst by far was rotting fish.I'm sorry I can't suggest any miracle cure for the smell but it does seem to fade a few days after the bath.Sometimes the smell seems just as bad until the dog dries out fully,which can hours for our hairy mut! In the summer he does it so often I have to keep him on a lead cause I take him to work with me & it can get embarrassing - yes we were at work when he rolled in the rotten fish!!

What fun and games.  To distract her gave her kong with a dollop of peanut butter which she loves, smeared the top of her head with the ketchup which seems to be where the strongest smell is coming from.  Now watching her trying to sniff where the ketchup is coming from is amusing :D

How long do you leave the ketchup on for?

Just a few minutes, but make sure that you comb/brush it through if you can.  And then rinse, rinse and rinse.  You must be covered in ketchup by now yourself!! ;)

I can't believe the tomato ketchup worked so well.

Still got the smell though, coming from the bit of carpet in the hallway.  Before I Vax it tomorrow is there anything else I should do first? I don't want to end up doing it three times like the dog. :)

Seriously tho, Bio washing powder diluted in warm water, rinsed and followed by spirit vinegar, the vinegar smell will go and leave the carpet smelling fresh :) :)

Thanks.  Actually can't smell it this morning.  Perhaps I have got used to it.  I'll wait until daughter surfaces and if she starts gagging again I will pop out and get the vinegar :D

I am surprised at your UK foxes, they appear to do their business right out in the open where your dogs can get at it.  There are lots of the lovely little critters here but I have never encountered their leavings.  Or maybe I'm just lucky that Jet is not interested in that particular smell, LOL.  However, the late winter air, when it is mating season, is full of the smell of fox, which is remarkably like skunk.  So, assuming their poopers also smell like skunk I would suggest a specially formulated shampoo for removing odours, for skunks if you can find it.  I've used both tomato juice and the special shampoo, for skunk spray, and find the shampoo to be much more effective.  And needs to be applied with warm water.

Edited to add, won't turn your white dog pink either.  Ever seen a pink ESS?

You'd be surprised where foxes leave their poo - on top of anthills is popular! It seems the more obvious the place the better!

Thanks for advice but we don't have the variety of critters you have :)   Certainly don't have skunk, thank goodness.  I am not sure if it was fox or not but it is not a smell I am familiar with and although I thought I had got rid of it, when I come in the house from outsdie t is actually still lingering.  Foxes probably do their business in the open because they don't have predators like your small animals do, well apart from Prince Charles and Co. that is.

I went to Pet Shop and there was a variety of shampoos but nothing for this type of problem.  The girl offered me a range of fruit smelling shampoos which I thought mixed with fox poo or whatever it is would put me off fruit for life.

Dog has been rubbed with Heinz Ketchup and bathed 3 times in a variety of products :rolleyes: and the carpet has been washed so I think I am just going to have to tough it out
