Topic Other Boards / Foo / electric agas?

Has anyone any experience of these. My traditional 55 year old solid fuel aga is 'dying' and it would cost mega bucks to do up. We are going to look at a secondhand electric one tomorrow. (we dont have any gas at our house so thats not an option) Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on them
Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue

We dont have an electric aga at the moment but are having one fitted on Tuesday.  The one we are getting is the 13amp type not the 30amp  economy seven one,  I could give you more feed back after having it fitted.

Also you might find this link helpful they have just had a discussion about 13 versus 30 amp agas.  I think if its secondhand and electric though it costs nearly as much to move and renew as a new one or at least I think this was true of the older electric agas?

For an idea of cost comparisons we have been told our one should cost around £13 to 16 a week to run this is new 4 oven 13amp electric one.

We like you do not have gas and my dad has just spent a fortune earlier in the year having his drive laid with new concrete and would not even think of having it ripped up to put in gas line.

Also have you thought about the diesel or oil type?

Thanks Both
We weighed up the cost of installing tanks etc and we are away from the road so access is difficulty for delivery/installation etc. Plus gotta be realistic about what I can afford. Its just that having had an aga I cant imagine being without one. the aga we are going to see is 17 years old so guess not the 13 amp type, Supposedly in good condition and has been serviced regularly, so will have a look anyway.

you don't need tanks installed, you can run your appliances straight from a gas bottle.

A regulator with twin outlet for two bottles, (one in use and one back up) can be bought for £80.00 by shopping round.

A  47 kg bottle currently costs about £32.00, we've been running a range for just over a year on a 19kg bottle, the bottle is about a quarter full now, and thats cooking for a B&B everyday as well as our own meals. Oddly, a 19 kg bottle is only a few pounds cheaper then a 47kg bottle, but the 19 came with the range cooker.

Surely not £13 - £16 per week for simply cooking?  I hardly pay that on food each week let alone the fuel to cook it!

£13-£16 thats a bit over the top, think I'll stick to gas

I have one and would not be without it. It heats all the water you want and the house and does the cooking and dries the washing.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is so efficient and so economical,
the only downside is that it is noisy when you first get one but you soon get used to it,
Good luck and oh it is a damn sight cheaper on fuel that the gas ones and gas ones are not so efficient.

Ok now I keep looking at them as my ovens are generally on about 4 hours a day, but dont they make the kitchen very hot? I can remember a great aunt had on in a fair size kitchen and in summer it was almost unbearable.
