i have just started weaning my 3 week old mini dachshunds (and none are for sale so this is not advertising) i started by giving them weetabix saturated with lactol on my breeders advice, but upon reading other threads wonder if this is the most successful healthy way of weaning pups.  they have taken to it really well and all are thriving but i would be really grateful of other peoples opinions and although all opinions are appreciated i would really like to hear from other dachshund people as to what they weaned their pups on, how often and when to introduce new foods.  thanks very much for any advice

Not a dachshund person, but I wouldn't use weetabix. I just looked it up and while I couldn't find an ingredient list the maunfacturers make a fuss about how low in fat it is. 3 week old pups need quite a lot of fat and protein. As the pups are already lapping from a dish, I'd change to a good quality puppy food whizzed up with lactol in the blender to make a milky porridge. As the pups get older you can reduce the blending until they are getting the solid food soaked in lactol, and then reduce the lactol until they are eating the puppy food on its own.

I have always raised my litters on warm soaked Iams puppy food (full of every vitamin and mineral that your pups need) and an occassional bowl of scrambled egg, I have always had very healthy, happy, pups so recommend these two foods 100%.

I'd do what Jas says as that's exactly what my friend weans her puppies on and they do really well. She uses James Wellbeloved but whatever brand you prefer should be fine. If you plan on feeding tinned food when they are weaned, just use the puppy version of the food and whizz it up the same as the soaked dry food. Weaning isn't a breed specific thing so all puppies should do well on that method.

Hi
We have dachshunds and wean a three and a half week litter on Pedigree puppy porridge 4 times a day and start them on Nutro puppy about four and a half weeks that has been soaked with warm water, they have that about twice a day, a teaspoon each.
They look and do well on this.
