Topic Dog Boards / General / Gets the rest of us a bad name

I live in a cul-de-sac of just 9 houses and we are the only household to own a dog.  I have tried to be a responsible dog owner and am very aware of considering my neighbours as I want my dog to be accepted and not seen as a nuisance.  It made me so mad yesterday as we set off on our walk that on the pavement outside my neighbour's house was a trail of dog poo.  This is about the third time in the last couple of weeks this has happened.  It upset me as there are 6 small children who play on the pavements here and it would only bit a matter of time before they trod/ fell in it and my dog looks prime suspect as the culprit.

I always clear up after her on the streets and the park because it is the sociable thing to do. The council here are very strict as well and have dished out heavy fines for those caught not clearing up after their dogs and I fully support that.

Why are people so selfish? :(

Hi,

The reason is because they get away with it!  Would your council not put up any signs regarding dog toileting, sometimes if it becomes a problem they will.

I would feel terrible too, as of course you will be thinking that curtains are twitching and your poor dog is getting the blame. There are always going to be irresponsible dog owners, most of us always try to do the right thing.  Just make sure that your neighbours know it is not you, by complaining about it to them also. Apart from sitting at your window to catch the culprit there is little else to do. Let's just hope the culprit will change direction and walk a different way. LOL

Why not make a notice and put it on your gate saying something like "Clear up your dog mess, I do so can you"

This should send a message to the culprit and your neighbours.

There was a similar notice outside a house I recently passed, though this one said the culprit would be reported :D

It is a personal pet hate of mien as I walk five dogs and if I come past poo I always thingk the oncoming people will assume it was from my dogs when they see it.

I did tell two of my neighbours and assume they will pass on the message.  One said to me "oh that's ok" and I ranted "no it's not, it's disgusting!" Think I surprised him but I hate it as much as anyone else.

I have seen a couple of people with dogs.  It's quite bizarre because they obviously don't live here and the cutting through just takes you to another cul-de-sac and yet we live only half a minute's walk from a big park and woods.  At the entrance to the park is the first dog poo bin.  I don't think signs would do any good as it is well publicised in the local paper about people getting fines.  I don't think they have any intention of clearing up but I am keeping my eye out today for the people who walk through here with dogs and if I see them I might just stand at my door with my camera in clear view!!

We have a similar issue, but are on the way to the main park for most people in the village. Sadly we have decided that life is too short to get wound up about it and so we just stop and pick it up ourselves. Our neighbours cannot even be bothered to pick up the litter dropped by (their) children, which winds us up even more. :(

I had the same problem someone was letting thier dog poo outside my gate and in three different places up our road I am convinced that neighbours think its my girls but I pick up too after them... so I contacted the Council and asked them to come and clean the pavements and put up notices that say they will be fined £1000 if prosectuted they also painted little signs on the pavement in yellow saying pick it up I didnt think they would go this far and  was a little concerned that neighbours would not like the signs on the pavement but they worked... no more dog poo the signs gradually wear off so I contact the council again and they repaint them.
I think it works because people dont know who is watching them so dont take the chance.

What a good idea - I might contact my council too. I live on an estate and have recently got a puppy so was unaware how much dog poo is left on the pavements and grass verges around the estate. And there are dog bins nearby. We have a front lawn which runs alongside a public path and there was a trail of poo on the path and on my front lawn recently - not the first time either. I cannot understand why owners cannot pick up, its not difficult. Apparently you can request more dog bins too.

Hi Roni

Your council sounds good.  I've lived here 6 years but it's only been in the last couple of weeks that it seems to have started happening.  I am going to try and catch them. Funnily enough I see lots of dogs being walked across the end of my road on their way to the park or back and yet I don't see anything on the pavements leading to the park.

My mum caught a man letting his dog foul her path.  The dog was on a lead but halfway up her path with the man standing at the end of the path.  It was early inthe morning and my mum had opened door to get the milk in.  She gave him a right mouthful and never saw him again. :D  What a cheek though?

That sounds good, not sure that it would happen round here though. We requested more dog bins, when council said they could not afford them and did not think it necessary. We offered to fund them and council said they could not get them emptied. It was only whe we raised it at a public meeting that they backed down and agreed that they would empty them if we paid for them :(

Hi, where i live the council are very very strict on cleaning up after your dogs.

But the kids/teenager ( 10-16) rip down the signs on the lamp posts or wherever they are or spray paint them black.

All i can say is im abit pleased in a way they do this because sometimes i forget to take out the extra plastic bag whenever my dogs stop for a second dropping :)

Its clear that your neighbours are either dog haters or dont like animals altogether, if it were me, i wouldnt really care.
- By CherylS Date 14.10.05 20:24 UTC
It's not my neighbours that are complaining, it's me :)

I can remember only too clearly having to scrape dog mess of my children's shoes, buggy wheels and once even the length of my son's track suit.  This has happened too often in too short a space of time for it to be absent mindedness.

I live on the corner near a dog park, people take their dogs for a walk to the park but off lead and they choose to use my garden as a toilet on the way( we live in a cul de sac with open fronted gardens)so i complained to the council asked them for a fence along the front, they said no to them doing a fence but they would put a 'pick it up ' sign on my side fence, it was there a couple weeks then some buggers ripped it off!!!!!!!!!!

I watch for the culprit and then lie in wait :D when I see them allowing their dog to poo (and knowing they are NOT going to pick up ;) )  I open the front door and offer them a bag saying something like  "Oh, isn't it embarrassing when they catch you out?  Here's a bag, I always have lots"  I find they are so startled that they pick it up :D :D  and then they stop walking past :D :D

I ALWAYS make a big point of swinging  the poo bag on the way home :D :D the local kids often ask what it is and I tell them, they usually say YUK until I point out it would be even yukkier on the bottom of their shoes or on their socks :D :D :D :D  I'm starting their education young :D :D :D

Either that or watch for them, pick it up in a bag, follow them home and post it through their letterbox with a note attached "I think you forgot this". Mwahahahaha!

It's my absolute number one pet hate - other people letting their dog's sh*t all over the place. We have about 7 big dogs locally and we all pick up after our pooches. But there's a little old man - goodness only knows where he lives but it's not in the immediate vicinity - that lets his terrier cr*p all over the place. I have noticed it seems to be the older generation with little dogs or the lads with staffies (must be too embarrassing - a girl they fancy or their mates might see them) that tend to not pick up around here. Some little dogs seem to be able to poo half their own body weight in one go and face it, if you stand in it a turd is a turd!
