This may sound a stupid question but are dogs supposed to bleed loads after being chipped. I took my 17 week old this morning and she bled loads. The nurse took her back in for her to be checked over as well. I have had other dogs chipped in the past with no bleeding or just small amounts. Maybe i was just lucky before?

Sounds to me like they nicked a capilliary vein

I was quite shocked to have the same happen to my Lexi when she was 13 weeks, having just ahd the gang checked for their chps when redoing Pet Passports for two of them I did ask the vet, and he said sometimes you just hit a small blood vessel.

It can happen when you tattoo as well the difference being the ink has a stipetic(sp)agent in it so stops the bleeding. The capilliaries are very small & any blood loss always looks worse than what it is

Whenever i got my dogs chipped, they only had a few drops of blood but thats it ...

best get it checked out by a vet

Thanks i showed my pup to the nurse on the way out and she took her back in to clean her up and check her over, I am rubbish at the sight of blood so i was shocked at the time. My mind has been eased now and to be honest my pup took it in her stride and has been happy enough since, Thanks for the replies.

It happens with some but not with others. When I did the course we were told a) to always warn the owners that it might happen, and b) expect it to happen in white dogs as it's sod's law. <grin>  I did a litter of Ridgeback pups once where a few of them bled a lot but others not at all.

Mine didn't bleed when he was chipped

The only one I've had chipped bled - and now even 4 years later he's unhappy with men reaching over his back, which has rather put the kybosh on his show career!
