Our elderly dog ate a large rawhide chew two days ago. Since then he has been passing lighter, more mucousy stools. I don't usually give my dogs rawhide, hubby persuaded me to let him have one, wish I hadn't listened. Should I take him to the vet incase he has got an obstruction? Sorry, I know it's difficult to give advice in situations like this but I just wondered if anyone else had been through similar with rawhide? He is eating well & doesn't seem to be in any pain. I haven't actually noticed any solid rawhide in his poo but will keep checking.

A Beardie I used to have would have mucous covered poo if she had too much rawhide. She would pinch the other dogs so I eventually just stopped buying them and she never had it again

This could be coincidence, or the dog may have a piece of rawhide "stuck" somewhere, but not completely causing a blockage, if you are concerned I would talk to your vet.

Rawhide chews are treated with all sorts of chemicals to make them white, or to give them colours and come from "unreliable" sources, therefore personally I would avoid them like the plague.

Now your asking! It was a few years ago but I would say only the next day or maybe a bit the following day. As your dog is older it may have had a more dramatic effect. Is yours used to rawhide?? Just noticed he isn't I should read properly :) Is he drinking OK? No vomiting?

yes he's drinking normally, no vomiting & eating as per usual. Hubby says not to worry as the dog seems ok. I'm waiting for him to 'perform' again, no better & I'll phone the vet.

Relief - for dog & me. He's just passed a normal poo! Will still keep a close eye on him but no more rawhide chews!! Thanks for the advice
